1. Compare the theoretical heat consumption in kJ/kWh and the final wetness fraction of exhaust
steam for following cycle in which steam is supplied at 67 bar and exhaust at 0.035 bar.
a) Initial steam temperature 480 º C. Overall efficiency of turbine 0.82. Alternator
efficiency 0.96
b) Initial steam temperature 480ºC. steam reheated to 480 º C. Steam pressure entering
reheater 7 bar, steam pressure entering turbine from reheater 6 bar. Overall efficiency
of each turbine 0.82. Alternator efficiency 0.96
2. A steam power plant equipped with regenerative as well as reheat arrangement is supplied with
steam to H.P turbine at 80 bar and 470 ºC. For feed heating a part of steam is extracted at 7 bar
and remainder of steam is reheated to 350 ºC in reheater and then expanded in L.P. turbine
drown to 0.035 bar. Determine a) amount of steam bled off for feed heating b) Amount of
steam in L.P. turbine c) Heat supplied in boiler and reheater d) output of the turbine e) cycle
efficiency
3. A steam power plant with inlet steam to the H.P. turbine at 90 bar and 500º C and condensation
at 40 º C produces 500 MW. It has one stage of reheat optimally placed which raises the steam
temperature back to 500 º C. One closed feed water heater with drains cascaded back to the
condenser receives bled steam at reheat pressure and the remaining steam is reheated and
then expanded in the L.P. turbine. The H.P. and L.P. turbines have isentropic efficiency of 92%
and 90% respectively. The isentropic efficiency of the pump is 75%. Calculate a) the mass flow
rate of steam at turbine inlet in kg/s b) the cycle efficiency c) the cycle work ratio.
4. Steam is supplied to a turbine at a high pressure of 52 bar and 420 º C. It is expanded in High
pressure turbine to 5.5 bar, the internal efficiency ratio of the H.P turbine being 0.8. The steam
is then reheated at constant pressure up to 250 º C. It is then expanded to 0.035 bar with the
same internal efficiency ratio. Calculate the mass of steam generated by the boiler per kWh
output and the heat consumption of the turbine per kWh if the mechanical efficiency of turbine
is 99% and the alternator efficiency is 96%.
