Geometry Project

Students will use the Interactive activity named “Geometric Solids” on NCTM’s Illuminations
website and can be found by following the link provided below.

https://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3521

The activity’s introduction/summary should look as follows when students pull the activity up.

The students will pick from the drop down menu offering different three-dimensional figures for
the students to choose from. The example chosen for this project was a cube and initially looked
as follows:
Performance Objective #1- This application allows for students to build and connect previously
covered information while completing the interactive activity. The 3rd grade TEKS (b)(6)(B)
acknowledges that students will be able to use attributes to recognize several examples of
quadrilaterals.

Use in Class- This application offers several opportunities to connect a previous lesson over
quadrilaterals and their properties to the faces of several three-dimensional figures available.

Performance Objective #2- Students will be able to use the manipulative three-dimensional
figure to practice naming aspects of three-dimensional figures using formal geometric language
as the 3rd grade TEKS states (b)(6)(A). The application allows for the different attributes (faces,
edges, vertices) to each be different colors if the student desires, so they are able to visually see
what attribute they are clicking.

Use in Class- This interactive activity would be extremely useful to engage in after the initial
lesson when vocabulary terms (face, edge, vertices) are introduced to allow the students to
manipulate and explore the application of the terms with a visual. The students will be able to
learn through trial and error and the ability to show the total will allow them to check their
answers independently.

The 3rd grade TEKS referenced above are listed below for clarity.
§111.5. Grade 3, Adopted 2012.

(b) Knowledge and skills

(6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to
analyze attributes of two-dimensional geometric figures to develop generalizations about
their properties. The student is expected to:

(A) classify and sort two- and three-dimensional figures, including cones,
cylinders, spheres, triangular and rectangular prisms, and cubes, based on
attributes using formal geometric language

(B) use attributes to recognize rhombuses, parallelograms, trapezoids, rectangles,

and squares as examples of quadrilaterals and draw examples of quadrilaterals
that do not belong to any of these subcategories
