2.2 Potential difference, V, Current, I and resistance, R.

Theory :
1. Ohm’s Law : Ohm’s Law states that the potential difference, V across a conductor is directly proportional
to the current, I flows through it if the physical condition and the temperature of the
conductor remain unchanged.

2. V α I or = constant = R
3. Ohmic conductor obeys Ohm’s Law
Non-Ohmic conductor does not obey Ohm’s law.

Objective: 1. To verify Ohm’s Law.

2. To identify Ohmic conductor and Non-Ohmic conductor.

Aim of experiment : To investigate the relationship between potential difference, V across a conductor and the
current, I flows through it in an electric circuit for
(a) A resistance wire ( Constantan wire)
(b) A light bulb.
Apparatus and  4 dry cells with battery holder
Materials:  Switch
 Rheostat
 Ammeter (0-1A)
 Voltmeter (0-5V)
 Standard resistance (Constantan Wire)
 Light bulb
 7 pieces connecting wire

Circuit diagram :

Resistor R

V
Diagram (a)

procedure: 1. Set up the circuit as shown in Diagram (a).

2. Turn on the switch and adjust the rheostat to gain a small current flow in the circuit.
3. Record the current, I shown on the ammeter and respective potential difference, V across
the resistor R.
4. Adjust the rheostat to another 4 reading of current, I and record the respective potential
difference,V in the table below.
5. Repeat experiment from step 1 to step 4 by replacing resistor with a light bulb.

Tabulate Data: (a) Resistor R I/A V/V

(b) Light bulb I/A V/V

Analysis of Data: 1. Plot a graph of potential difference , V against current, I for

(a) resistor R
(b) the light bulb.

2. State the relationship between potential difference, V and current, I for graph (a)
and graph (b).

3. Name the quantity represent by gradient of the graph V against current, I.

4. Compare the gradient of graph (a) and Graph (b).

5. Deduce resistance of a resistor and a light bulb.

6. Resistor R and light bulb, which one is an Ohmic conductor or Non-Ohmic conductor.

Enrichment : 1. Using scientific skill, find the resistance of the resistor R and the light bulb.

2. Name two example of Ohmic conductor and two example of Non-Ohmic conductor.

3. If large current flow through the circuit, the resistor will be heated. Deduce what will
happen to the gradient and the resistance of the resistor.

4. State two precautions to be taken to increase the accuracy of the result.
