Transformations:

I found this problem difficult because I wasn’t able to recognize the transformation from its

parent function. I knew that there were a total of five transformations and each had their own

specific “rule”. I knew that a plus sign (+) indicated that the transformation shifted upward

vertically (ex. f(x) + 2) and that a minus sign ( - ) meant that the transformation shifted

downward (ex. f(x) – 3). When I looked in my textbook for help, I saw that there were noticeable

differences between each of the transformations and their parent functions. When I finally could

tell the difference between all of them, I was able to complete a graph.

𝒇(𝒙) = (𝒙 + 𝟒)^𝟐

𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑭𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: 𝒇(𝒙) = (𝒙 + 𝒄)

Description of transformation: horizontal shift 4 units left

Question: What does a graph look like that has a reflection about the “x axis” and what is

the parent function?

Graph:

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 − 𝒇(𝒙)
