Career Goals
Why do you want to be a teacher?
When I was a child, I would set up my stuffed animals and teach to them in my bedroom. That was the
memory I clung to whenever deciding my career for college. Watching students succeed and understand a
topic brings the utmost joy to my life and is the sole reason I stay in this profession. Being a teacher is
much more than simply teaching; you are so many things for these children and most teachers do not
realize that until something big comes along that a student needs from you. Being a teacher is the closest
thing, to me, that makes me feel like I am making a difference in the world.
Describe three of your personal characteristics that will enable you to be a successful teacher in the
certification you are seeking.
When thinking of my past teachers and picking one that was “perfect” I think about an educator with
compassion, understanding, and strong-will. Those are the three characteristics I feel will make me a
successful teacher with my peers and a “perfect” teacher for my students. Compassion and understanding
are things that some of these children never see and never get at home; and the thought of being the only
person who will listen to them and understand their hardships regarding school and life is something that
will keep them in school when they reach the age to make that decision. Another aspect of compassion
regarding coworkers is being able to take criticism and use it for making yourself better; I have always
been able to take suggestions and utilize them to the best of my ability. Being strong-willed is something
every teacher needs in order to keep control of their classroom in a manner that is respectful to both
themselves and the students they are providing for. Having a strong personality has gotten me many
opportunities in this field of work because I can walk into any room with an independence and strong
attitude that makes me confident no matter the situation.
Describe three of your personal characteristics that may present a challenge for you to be a
successful teacher in the certification you are seeking and explain how you will overcome these challenges.
Personally, I have struggled with things that most people do not see as every day struggles. My main
hardships that can set me back is my unwillingness to say ‘no’, my desire to take the lead on things, and
my stubbornness. The way that I can use these to not so much as overcome them but see how to work on
them is to limit myself to how many tasks, clubs, and obligations I take on at once. Limiting myself will
lessen my stress with saying ‘no’ as well as my want to take the lead because I will want to do that in all
things I am involved in. My stubbornness is something that I have struggled with for awhile. It is
something that I had not learned how to get over until I was in a position where being stubborn would
have gotten me nowhere in this profession. Being able to have a mentor in this profession that showed me
ways to overcome being stubborn has really helped me get through it.
