Shelby Cielak ’19 is pursuing marketing and public relations majors. She was hired by Boldt Construction
as a PR intern to keep the campus informed about the Tower. For the next couple of months, she will be
the voice between Boldt and the student body.

I’ve been able to talk to Boldt Construction about what’s happening on the outside, but, to gather
more information about what’s expected to happen on the inside, I reached out to Kimberlie
Goldsberry with some questions. Ms. Goldsberry is vice president for student affairs and dean of
students. Make sure to check out the fly through of The Tower: /www.carthage.edu/tower-initiative/

Who will have first pick to live in the Tower?

“Upperclass students (sophomores through seniors) will be able to sign up for

the Tower through the housing selection process.”

Any estimation how much extra it will cost?

Nathan Spangler, Manager of Student Financial Accounts, said “The Tower will
have two rates - one for a double occupancy room and one for a single occupancy room. The single
occupancy room will be $13,290 for the academic year while the double occupancy room will be

$12,990 for the year. Both rates include the standard meal plan of 70 points/week and 900 flex points
per year.”

What do you think will be the favorite feature among students?

“There could be many! The room style of traditional suites (two students on each side sharing a
common bathroom); the campus views and lake views will be spectacular; and the access to
kitchenettes and lounge spaces will be attractive to residents seeking a quiet place to study if their
roommate is napping/sleeping; or a spot for a floor meeting or program. There are also these cool
cutout nooks near the elevators that will be great spaces for study! Obviously, the convenient ability to
visit friends in Madrigrano or Johnson without ever leaving the building will be great in the winter! The
community space on the lower two floors will be tremendous! So much to enjoy in terms of hangout,
study, and programming space.”

Will any rooms be set aside for freshmen?

“No.”

What appliances will be included in the kitchens?

“Stove/oven, microwave, sink and small refrigerator, trash, recycling, and table seating as well!”

One of the fun new things being added are fireplaces. How will those operate?

“The fireplaces are gas and will be operating by a locked key system, much like the fireplaces in other
locations on campus. There will likely be set days and times when the firepit is on outside and the
fireplace will be on inside.”

Will the landscaping match the rest of campus, or will there be differences?

“Every effort is made to tie in landscaping to match the beauty of our existing campus landscape.
There will be a significant number of new trees planted around the building — trees that were
removed as part of the construction.”

Will there be RAs, and how many?

“Yes, there will be resident assistants in the Tower. We have three RAs, each having two floors for
which they are responsible, so roughly 40 residents per RA.”

Is the furniture in the renderings similar to what will be placed in the building?

“Not necessarily. We have been working on identifying durable, functional, and flexible furniture for
community space as much as possible. Amber Krusza, director of residential life; Bill Hoare, associate
vice president for business; and I went to the Merchandise Mart in Chicago to visit with a number of
furniture vendors to help review a number of possibilities. The timeline is extremely short to build this
building, which pushes us to be efficient decision-makers on many construction features as well as
the finishing of the spaces. If time allows, there may be some furniture demos on campus for a few of
the pieces as we try to narrow them down.”

Has the majority of feedback you’ve heard about the new residence hall building
been positive or negative?

“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive!”
