Participants read about a rude comment and one of three apology responses: a basic apology, one that supported accepting or declining the apology, or one without support. The study found that allowing victims to make their own decision about acceptance led to higher rates of accepting the apology. Effective apologies acknowledge fault, express regret and knowledge of responsibility, and promise not to repeat the offense while offering reparations. Giving victims empowerment enhances perceived empathy and support, promoting forgiveness.
