Isometric Drawings

First Year: (Prepared by: Eng. Nazeer M. Ali) Isometric Drawings 1

Principle of Isometric Projections:
It is a pictorial orthographic projection of an object in which a transparent cube
containing the object is tilted until one of the solid diagonals of the cube becomes
perpendicular to the vertical plane and the three axes are equally inclined to this
vertical plane.

Isometric drawing is a drawing drawn on an isometric axes using full

scale.

Lines in Isometric Projection
The following are the relations between the lines in isometric projection
1. The lines that are parallel on the object are parallel in the isometric projection.
2. Vertical lines on the object appear vertical in the isometric projection.
3. Horizontal lines on the object are drawn at an angle of 30° with the horizontal in the
isometric projection.
4. A line parallel to an isometric axis is called an isometric line and it is fore shortened
to 82%.
5. A line which is not parallel to any isometric axis is called non-isometric line and the
extents of fore-shortening of non-isometric lines are different if their inclinations
with the vertical planes are different.

Sketch from an actual object:

STEPS

1. Positioning object.
2. Select isometric axis.
3. Sketch enclosing box.
4. Add details.
5. Darken visible lines.

Circle and Arc in Isometric
In isometric drawing, a circle appears as an ellipse

Sketching Steps
1. Locate the center of an ellipse.

2. Construct an isometric square.

3. Sketch arcs that connect the tangent points.

Four-center method is usually used when drawn an isometric ellipse with

drawing instrument.

Sketching Steps
1. Locate the center of an ellipse.
2. Construct an isometric square.

3. Construct a perpendicular bisector from each tangent point.

4. Locate the four centers.
5. Draw the arcs with these centers and tangent to isometric square.

Isometric Drawing – Inclined Surfaces
 The object represented at
right will be drawn as an
isometric drawing using
the following steps.

 Note the orientation of the

inclined surface and the
measurements.

Step 1

 Sketching the object as if it

were a complete cube
without any cuts.

 The measurements of overall

Width (A), Height (B) and
Depth (C) are transferred
from the (Projection views)
orthographic to the isometric
by counting grid spaces

First Year: (Prepared by: Eng. Nazeer M. Ali) Isometric Drawings 5

Step 2 –

 The angle of the inclined surface

cannot be transferred directly.
Locate the corners of the inclined
surface and then draw lines to
connect the corners.
 Notice that edges that are parallel in
the orthographic views will also be
parallel in the isometric drawing

Step 3

 Add the rectangular cut across

the left top edge.

 Notice that the rear of the edge

of the cut disappears behind the
raised portion of the block.

Step 4

 Add the rectangular cut across the

left top edge.

 Notice that the rear of the edge of

the cut disappears behind the
raised portion of the block.
