Students will compose a portfolio throughout the year that will include a compilation of the
following artifacts:
Students will need to show an average grade of 75% or higher in order to prove competency in 6
of the 8 categories covered by the end of 8th grade.
For the 9 week program, we decided to evenly distribute the categories so students would
have a range of activities throughout the class. This will keep the students actively engaged and
give them opportunity to explore a wide range of interests. Students will also be able to
continuously develop motor skills and tactics by participating in different activities within these
categories each year. We focused on 4 main categories based on the resources we have in Cobb
County and in order to give the students maximum opportunity to reach the standards.
For the net/wall category, we distributed the games so they increase in difficulty from 6th
grade to 8th grade. We start with pickle ball because the racket is shorter and therefore will be
easier to control for students. In 7th grade we move to badminton which requires a longer
handled racket, causing it to be more difficult. Volleyball is our 8th grade net/wall sport because
it allows the children to develop strength in order to hit the ball over the net. There is also more
variety of net/wall games, they are able to learn to play with different sized rackets and balls
which will help them transfer skills when trying out new sports in this category.

For the invasion game category, we start with ultimate frisbee in 6th grade, move to
soccer in 7th grade, and then introduce speedball in 8th grade. Teaching a variety of skills in all
of these sports will help the students meet the GPS. 6th graders will learn how to move to open
space and how to complete passes because the person with the frisbee cannot move. In 7th grade
the students will have more of a free range while moving because they can move up and down
the field with the ball. They will also learn dribbling with the soccer ball that will help them in
speedball in 8th grade. Students will also use moving to open space which they first used in 6th
grade. In 8th grade they will use what they have learned about dribbling the soccer ball,
completing passes and moving to open space in order to be successful at speedball and will be
able to apply these concepts to different sports when they enter high school.
For the dance/rhythms category we decided to start with jump rope in 6th grade in order
to focus on the rhythm and moves of the students. It also builds off of forming routines in 5th
grade. In 7th grade we went to line dance because it is more structured while in 8th grade they
move to hip-hop which is more fluent. All of these dances and rhythmic skills build on one
For the 18 week program, we used the same rationale as the 9 week program, but added
additional activities from each category because we had more time. For example, we added one
more invasion game for each grade level because we had more time. Invasion games are usually
well received by students, and therefore will keep their interest throughout the class. We also
added activities in the outdoor category such as hiking and orienteering due to our close
proximity to Kennesaw Mountain and because of the available resources that we will have.
