drug dealers following
the arrest of Marian Radio

Wednesday.

ties moved the 25-year old

jail where he awaits trial
for possession of illegal
drugs, and drug pushing, a
non-bailable offense.
Hortillosa said inves-
tigators withheld details
about Jagos’s March 25 ar-
rest because of a follow-up
police operation meant to
arrest more suspects. But
the operation yielded no
results.

prised of farm inputs and
fishing implements and
project grants that were

Students and teachers
NOW the euphoria of graduation exer-
cises have settled down. The reality for
History Trekker those who made it have
sunk in. Allow me to
talk about the people
who molded, equipped
and prepared them for
the world outside the
campus--the teachers!
It took me seven
years to finish a degree
Raul Ilogon in BS Electrical Engi-
neering: four years in
Cebu, a year in Cagayan de Oro and two
years in Manila.
I love schooling. Kinsa bay dili
ganahan anang sa Luzon, Visayas and
Mindanao ka nag-college. I realized I
was the only one in the family who did
that. But that is another story. I wish I
had the patience (and money) like my
father. I’m also grateful to my celebrity
sister, Dolly, for standing by me during
my troubled youth. Daghan kaayo
salamat, Papa and Manang Dolly.
Believe me, I have seen all kinds of
teachers. There are those who inspire
like my high school teachers. They
opened my eyes to the world outside my

ILIGAN City--The 14-month old baby

go home to get some rest. Even then,
the baby was still deteriorating. Fast, I
should say.
My mother, who got very tired of
keeping watch over my young sibling,
had the helper take over the job one
morning so she could get herself a few
winks. My father too was equally tired
as he, too, kept watch over the baby
during the night.
“Nang, Nong, look at the baby!
Something’s happening. She’s going
to... to...” The helper, Ilang, couldn’t
say some more. All of us went on panic

REMINISCING the old days is one of
the “past times” of senior citizens like
me and my barkada

without the once-favorite intoxicating
beverages.
Anak-Baryo is actually a shortened
reference to “Anak-baryo po kami, pero
pogi naman” which we fondly called
ourselves who were raised in a subur-

beloved Cagayan de Oro. They inspired
me to be the best of what I can be.
There are teachers who make you
perspire and burn the midnight oil like
one of my college professor who had
a habit of giving us lists of topics. He
would give one and in the next meeting,
he’d say, “OK, class, take out a whole
sheet of paper.”
There are those who only meet their
class thrice in an entire semester. First,
for the validation cards. Second, for the
mid-terms. And, third, for the finals. You
know, the kind who are only out there to
comply--compliance lang... pa chill-chill
lang.
Oh, yes, how can I forget my
Strength of Materials teacher who also
tested my drinking strength sa mga
malalamig na lugar ng Quiapo!
To all my teachers, thank you so
much. You have indeed prepared me for
the outside world. The lessons and the
discipline you taught inside and outside
of the classroom have propelled my
quick rise to the corporate ladder. I’m
forever grateful.
Did you know teaching was the no-

mode. I was 15 then and kind of fool-
ish like any other teenager. Yet I, too,
was very concerned and stayed home to
help watch over my kid sister. I was not
watching over her at the time because I,
too, had to get some winks.
In no time at all, we were at the ba-
by’s bedside. Her shoulders were going
up and down in spasms. The pupils in
her eyes retreated and all we saw were
the whites.
Mother cradled her in her arms even
as she was pressing her every which
way in an effort to get back to life an
obviously dying body. She then looked
upward and begged God for forgive-
ness. Everybody feared this must be the
dreaded moment...
The other family members decided to
do something to help. I ran to the town’s
only pharmacy and there, muttered
vaguely if they had something a miracle
tablet perhaps to bring back someone
to life. This only invited curiosity to the
lone storekeeper; she did not have such
tablet and instead plied me with endless
questions about what was happening. I
could only mutter some words and then
instead of going back home, I went to
the seashore to do some reflection to

One usually boring afternoon, the

thought of placing a sign that referred

Anak-Baryo. Others who have moved
on include Dante “Tedans” de la Ser-
na, Jimmy “Jimbol” Jabol and Romulo
“Moling” Lumagsao.
Yes, at least nine of us still see each
other from time to time. We still have

Wired spaghetti
CAGAYAN de Oro is finally tired of the
unsightly spaghetti wires. And its morn-
ing rush-hour traffic along Masterson
Avenue has eased, and

Why are they called spaghetti wires?
Hmmm. Let’s make a wild guess here.
Because they look like black spaghetti?
Sans squid ink.
When a Pinoy craves for spaghetti,
he thinks of Jollibee. Okay, let’s include
McDo, KFC, Greenwich, Shakey’s, Piz-
za Hut. Although there’s that one Pinoy
who will order a platter of spaghetti at
Chowking and Harbour City.
But my most favorite food for now
is the clam chowder at Gringo. Located
near the escalators at the second level of
SM downtown, it’s also the resto with
the best view of, well, the escalators.
A resto’s constant challenge is to
maintain the yumminess of its food.
Restos in malls are vulnerable to instant
comparisons—if a potential patron does
not like the menu and prices of the first
one, all he has to do is walk a few steps
to the next. And if the chef is having a
bad day, his resto will be avoided next
time, with the disappointed customer
choosing not to give it a second chance.
Yes, buti pa ang corrupt politician,
may second chance; ang resto, wala.
But with summer as the season to
bare all, it’s advisable to avoid restos for
now—you know, to keep the abs as tight
as the swimsuit that will cling to it like
a leech.
Netflix, though, doesn’t choose a par-
ticular season for frontal nudity—winter,
spring, summer, or fall, if a sex scene
calls for it, let it be. This can shock
virgins and the “like a virgin touched
for the very first time,” but it’s much
like the graft and corruption in govern-
ment—if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen
them all. But size does matter: stealing a
paper clip from the office’s supply room
is not the same as stealing $10 billion
from the national treasury. You don’t
even have to convert that to pesos if you
want to see the big picture. Because $10
billion is already big, and that amount
has been attached to a former president
who’s alleged to have stolen that much
from Pinas.
Sometimes, the Pinoy does stop,
look, and listen, to wonder why the ba-
rangay exists and what its officials have
done for the good of that barangay. If
the barangay official or his family can’t
follow rules, when they’re supposed to
be the epitome of good behavior in their
neighborhood, how can he discipline his
neighbors then, and impart to them the
laws of Pinas?
The neighbors can always tell him:
Ikaw gani...
You have to be kind of successful
in that field you now believe to be an
“expert” on.
There was this politician who always
had a solution to every problem. I won-
der if he still has that chutzpah, now that
someone close to him obviously didn’t
follow his advice, that is, if ever he
imparted any to that someone.
The wise one will learn to keep his
mouth shut, giving no advice at all, and
treat life as a spectator sport as he learns

thus the name stuck.
My grandfathers from
both sides were products of
the Thomasite. Both of them
became school principals.
My paternal grandfather
walked 26 kilometers to
school barefooted. This must
have been the reason why
I love trekking. It’s in my
genes. In 1916, Mr. Pastor
P. Ilogon became the first
principal of Cabadbaran,
Agusan Province.

My very concerned Papa

Baby Len had grown
up uneventfully with Papa
occasionally referring to
her as “binawi sa Ginoo” (
taken back from God). Her
schooling in the University of
the Philippines in college was
sponsored by another sibling
who had gotten himself a
scholarship from said univer-
sity in Diliman, Quezon City.
Len now is with an inter-
national NGO helping people
in need. Maybe that was why
she luckily had been resur-
rected at that crucial time?
We were told later that she
had “convulsion” due to her
fever and dehydration. And
many convulsions go all the
way to death, if not attended
to immediately and specially
if that occurs during the night
as everyone is asleep.
We were thankful to God.
And to Papa, to Mama, to
my kid sister who was able
to get Nang Toling immedi-
ately. The latter was bathing
then and she “forced” her
to continue her bath later as
there was an emergency. To
the nurse, to the doctor and
his team. It was later related
that the team with my Papa
nearly capsized in the pump
boat off the seas of Sogod

town,” our younger siblings
“took over” from us and
until now the Anak-Baryo
spirit still lives in that now
noisy and busy part of the
barangay.
On Tuesday, the Anak-
Baryo had a brief “updat-
ing” at the residence of
former congressman Rufus
“Intoy” Rodriguez.
It was fun and nostalgic
seeing the old guys in town
again.

Centers
DEPARTMENT of Trade and In-
dustry (DTI) will be bringing the
government’s first e-commerce
platform that hosts products of mi-
cro, small, and medium enterpris-
es (MSMEs), for online selling in
Negosyo Centers nationwide.
DTI will be partnering with the
Department of Science and Tech-
nology (DOST) to promote the
latter’s oneSTore.ph to MSMEs
for them to tap the online market.
“MSMEs are the backbone of
the Philippine economy. And as
part of President Rodrigo Du-
terte’s whole-of-government ap-
proach to assist MSMEs, we are
teaming up with DOST to impact
the lives of more Filipino entre-
preneurs,” DTI Secretary Ramon
Lopez said.
With over 800 Negosyo Cent-
ers nationwide, DTI has strong
links with MSMEs throughout

nounced Tuesday that it has
finalized a new order from an
American aircraft leasing com-
pany for eight more 737 MAX
airlines. Boeing said it has
signed a deal with Air Lease
Corp. (ALC), an American
aircraft leasing firm founded
in 2010, to sell the aircraft at
$936.8 million at list prices.
ALC said it owns 213 vari-
ous kinds of aircraft, including
Boeing, French-made Airbus,
Embraer and other models, and
the latest order raises its total 737
MAX orders to 138. It leases the
jets to more than 80 airlines across
47 countries in every major geo-
graphical region in the world.
Boeing said ALC has been a
big buyer of the improved 737
airplane. “Our success in MAX

these aircraft,” which reflected
