Students were able to count using pennies and dimes, use academic and content
vocabulary to describe numbers by using “less than”, “greater than”, and “equal to”
and learned new workplaces that highlighted addition problems using part part
whole. We learned a new Number Corner this week and our month’s goal is to learn
different ways to measure weight, length, capacity, and temperature.

Alphafriends: We will continue working on the Ee word family. Working mostly

on the short vowel sound in the “en,” “et,” “eg,” and “ed.”

What We Have Learned in First Grade!

The first week of takeover went well! I have learned so much and I appreciated this

Reading: This past we have been learning about the long “a” sound. On Thursday,
the students got the chance to use the “Magic e” wand to make the vowel Aa say its
name. They loved it! We have enjoyed reading about a missing cake and a lost
hamster named Flake while participating in a mini play. We continue to focus on
new comprehension strategies and fluency skills. Please give them additional help
during their reading at home!

So far, we have learned:

**Please feel free to have your student make flashcards. It will also help them learn
how to spell these words.

Math: This unit was so much fun because it was centered around the animal
penguins. Not only were we learning about math skills and strategies in addition
and subtraction, but also, we learned some fun facts about penguins. Some of these
strategies students came up with were doubling, making a friendly number, take-
away some, or adding up. We were able to use different manipulatives, visuals, and
story problems to practice these skills.

Writing: We have continued our unit of Narrative Writing and I have been so
impressed with the student’s creative stories! Students have started wrapping up
their first stories in their series books. Our lessons were centered this week on
writing “Juicy” words vs “Boring” words. We also looked at how some books grab
the reader’s attention. We learned some beginning transition words to hook our
readers, so they would be interested in reading our writing.
