JANUARY 2014 CONFIDENTIAL SECTION A (Total: 60 marks) INSTRUCTION: Answer ALL Questions. Please use the answer booklet provided. Question 1 Staring from rest, a particle moving in a straight line has an acceleration of a=(4t-8)mis, where + is in seconds. What is the particle's velocity when 7 = 4s, and what is its position when ¢ = 9s? (20 marks) Question 2 ‘The parts in an assembly line are thrown off the conveyor with a horizontal velocity of 3 mis as shown in Figure 1. Determine the time needed for the parts to hit the lower level at B and the range R where they begin to pile up. Car B moves along a curve having a radius of curvature of 100 m. 20 m/s Figure 2 (20 marks) PPB25303 / PPB36703 ENGINEERING MECHANICS: DYNAMICS 2 JANUARY 2014 CONFIDENTIAL, SECTION B (Total: 40 marks) INSTRUCTION: Answer only TWO (2) questions. Please use the answer booklet provided. Question 1 The 6 kg block has an initial velocity of 4 mis on the smooth plane. If a force P=(2.40N, where t is in seconds, acts on the block for 3 s, determine the final velocity of the block and the distance the block travels during this time. 4mis P=24t Figure 3 (20 marks) PPB25303 / PPB36703 ENGINEERING MECHANICS: DYNAMICS 3 JANUARY 2014 CONFIDENTIAL Question 2 “The 20 kg crate shown in Figure 4 is acted upon by a force having a variable magnitude P =(1000)NV, where £ is in seconds. Determine the crate’s velocity 2s after P has been applied. The initial velocity is Im/s down the plane, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate and the plane is 0.32. 1 mis Figure 4 (20 marks) PPB25303 / PPB36703 ENGINEERING MECHANICS: DYNAMICS 4 JANUARY 2014 CONFIDENTIAL Question 3 ‘The 32 kg disk shown in Figure 5 is pinned at its centre. Determine the number of revolutions it must take to attain an angular velocity of 22 rad/s starting from rest. It is acted upon by a constant force F = 12 N, which is applied to a cord wrapped around its periphery, and @ constant couple moment M = 6 Nm. Neglect the mass of the cord. == M=6Nm 0.24m Fri2N Figure § (20 marks) END OF QUESTION PPB25303 | PPB36703 ENGINEERING MECHANICS: DYNAMICS 5
