INTRODUCTION
Online shopping is the process whereby consumers directly buy
goods or services from a seller in real-time, without an intermediary
service, over the internet.
It is a form of electronic commerce.
An online shop, e shop, e-store, Internet shop, web shop, web store,
online store, or virtual store evokes the physical analogy of buying
products or services at a in a shopping center.
Consumers find a product of interest by visiting the website
of the retailer directly or by searching among alternative
vendors using a shopping search engine, which displays the
same product's availability and pricing at different e-retailers.
Online shopping has grown in popularity over the years,
mainly because people find it convenient and easy to bargain
shop from the comfort of their home or office.
An online shop evokes the physical analogy of buying
products or services at a regular bricks-and-mortar retailer or
shopping center; the process is called business-to-consumer
(B2C) online shopping.

A typical online store enables the customer to browse the

firm's range of products and services, view photos or images
of the products, along with information about the product
specifications, features and prices.
Online stores typically enable shoppers to use "search"
features to find specific models, brands or items. Online
customers must have access to the Internet and a valid
method of payment in order to complete a transaction, such
as a credit card, a debit card or a service such as PayPal.

3
For example, when a person shops at a brick-and-mortar shop
she has to drive to the store, find a parking place and walk
throughout the store until she locates the product she needs.
After finding the items she wants to purchase she may often
need to stand in long lines at the cash register, however
online shopping helps to avoid these disadvantages. With
online shopping a person logs on to the internet, visits the
stores websites and chooses the items to be purchased and
select the mode of payment.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Nowadays online shopping has become very popular amongst
people, they have become techno savvy and feel very
comfortable using the internet.
The facilities and services being provided by online shopping
websites have made it very easy for the people to buy
products they desire at ease.
In the course of study various interesting facts were arrived.
A questionnaire was prepared and was filled by the people.
The questions asked were based on understanding the
behavior of the customers shopping online, their likes and
views about the concept on ecommerce altogether
During the survey it was concluded that people indulged in
online shopping and the online buyers below to the age group

4
of 15 – 30 years as compared to other age groups. Normally
in this age group the school students, college students,
young working class employees and professional people fall.
We came to know that the online buyers visit and shop most
from amazon website
It was noted that people like online shopping being promoted
and getting better and bigger over time and giving
competition to traditional and manual shopping methods
which indicates that people are being more familiar with
ecommerce and digital market

REASONS WHY PEOPLE PREFER ONLINE

SHOPPING
Convenience:
One of the biggest reason for choosing this method of
shopping is the comfort and convenience being provided
by the online shopping websites. Where else can people
get to do shopping even at midnight wearing a night suit?
People do not have to wait in a line or wait till the shop
assistant is ready to help people with the purchases.
People can do shopping in minutes even if they are busy
apart from saving time and avoiding crowds. Online shops
give us the opportunity to shop 24 hours.

Better Prices
Another thing which fascinates people is the cheap deals
and better prices they get from online stores because
products come direct from the manufacturer or seller

5
without middlemen involved. Many online shops offer
discount coupons and rebates.
Variety
The choices people can get for products are amazing. One
can get several brands and products from different
sellers at one place. People can get in on the latest international
trends without spending money on airfare. Send Gifts Online
Shopping makes sending gifts to relatives and friends easy, no
matter where ever they stay.
Comparison of Prices
Online shops make comparison and research of products and
prices possible. Online stores also give people the ability to
share information and reviews with other shoppers who have
firsthand experience with a product or retailer.

Compulsive Shopping
Many times when people go out on Shopping people end up
buying things which we do not require because of the shop
keepers up selling skills. Sometimes we even compromise on
our choices because of the lack of choices in those shops.

OBJECTIVE OF THE REPORT

The purpose of the survey was to know that which online
shopping website people like and prefer the most amongst all
the popular and most used websites
Other objective was to know the consumer behavior towards
the period of shopping. It was to know that during which offer
period people prefer and shop the most so as to understand the

6
consumer mentality towards their capacity and willingness to
spend. The periods offered were Fresh Arrival period, Mid Sale
Period and Bumper Sale Period
Next objective was to know how often people visit the online
shopping websites for shopping so as to understand that how
regular are they for online shopping so that offers offered by the
websites can be based on their regularity
To know that how much the consumers are willing to spend on
online shopping on monthly basis. This helps to get an estimate
of the sales which an online shopping website would get as it
depends on the amount which is spend by the end customers.
To know that how do people find the services and facilities
provided by online shopping websites or is there a need for
changing and improving the delivery of services
To know that what type of products do people prefer buying
from online shopping websites ranging from households,
lifestyle, electronics etc.
To know that is online shopping helping people to save their
time by not visiting the store physically and standing in lines for
payments.

METHODOLOGY
1.Deciding the subject of Research
Initially we had a lot of ideas for survey-based project. Then I decided
that the survey sample should be huge. So we decided to take a
subject in which we can get wide range of sample size. In order to
face 21st century internet prepares people of different age groups to
adapt to social and technological changes that are taking place at an

7
unprecedented rate. In this context internet especially is a resource for
continued education for the acquisition of new knowledge and skills,
for gaining information through media. Online shopping is an example
of internet
2. Framing appropriate Questionnaires
The initial steps of our project was to frame a less complicated
questionnaire so that our sample have a clear idea what is being
required from them and save their precious time .

TYPE OF DATA SOURCE

Primary data: Primary data are those data which are
collected for the first time, taking a sample, representing a
population. It is not a published data, it is problem specific
data collected by the researcher, and it becomes the
secondary data for everybody, other than the researcher.
One of the method of collecting primary data is survey
research. In this report survey research method has been
adopted.
by and readily available from others sources. Such data are
cheaper and more quickly obtainable than the primary data.
Here the information collected about online shopping is
through secondary sources.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

The data collection method chosen here is questionnaires as the
research instrument
A questionnaire consists of a set of questions presented to
respondents. Because of its flexibility, the questionnaire is by

8
far the most common instrument used to collect the primary
data. In preparing questionnaire, a researcher carefully chooses
the questions, their formation and working sequence. The
formation of questions can influence the response.
The questionnaire was a multiple choice answers based
questionnaire.

Sample size: Our sample is 47 . We surveyed 47 samples,

which were bifurcated into males and female who use the
internet for purchase. Sample space: The sample space of
study consisted of 47 men, women, belonging to different
occupations, reading habits, qualification and monetary
status.

TYPE OF RESEARCH
Descriptive Research is used in this report. Descriptive
Research includes enquiries, surveys and fact findings of
different kinds.

FINDINGS
 When analyzed it was seen that amazon website is having highest
rating and people shop most from that website
 People don’t prefer shopping online during fresh arrival period as they
may have the perception that the same thing can be bought from
physical shops and there is not any great and additional benefit the
customer is getting during fresh arrival period.
 One barrier seen was the amount of money spent by people on online
shopping monthly was found highest in lowest range provided which is
Below Rs 5000 only
 The kind of product people prefer buying online is yet another
important thing and it was analyzed that people prefer buying more of
lifestyle products over others, which means that people are not willing
to buy high priced products like electronics.
 It was found that nearly 75% prefer COD mode of payment which also
indicates that they may be not be willing to pay before hand and
prepaid for the product due to certain perceptions.

CONCLUSION
 After having detail study on Online Shopping one can see a great
change in the behavior of people in many manners like their attitude,
buying pattern.

21
 In earlier times people use to do manual shopping but now as time
changed people are becoming busy and due to which technology has
brought a new revolution i.e. Online Shopping.
 As we started doing survey we came to know that people are
accepting online market gradually however there are some barriers
and limitations
 And even some people does not prefer using plastic money i.e. credit
cards but still prefer cash on delivery mode.

RECOMMENDATON

 As we see that people prefer buying during mid sale and bumper sale
period but the amount spent on online shopping is more in the range
of Below Rs 5000, so they can provide good sale offers lasting for

22
long period due to which people may buy more and thereby increase
their sales.
 As it shows that people prefer buying mostly lifestyle products online
over other mentioned ones as they have different views or perceptions
a survey or research can be conducted to understand the reason and
thereby try to increase sale of other product range too.
 It seems that people use online shopping websites monthly or rarely
hence they can provide schemes, offers and try to develop their
interest in shopping from online websites more often and regularly.
