 Supreme Court gives last chance to Karnataka


to release Cauvery water

The Supreme Court gave Karnataka a last chance


to release 6000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil
Nadu.
The Centre to set up the Cauvery Water
Management Board by October 4.
Invoking its limitless powers under Article 144 of
the Indian Constitution to enforce its orders,
warned Karnataka in its order that it was “bound
to obey the orders of the Supreme Court”.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah on
September 29, saying that Karnataka stands by its
September 23 resolution to not share Cauvery
water as it was the “will of its people”.

the initiative for talks between the two States.

About Kaveri

Kaveri or Cauvery flows in Karnataka and Tamil


Nadu but 3% basin in Kerala, 41% in Karnataka
and 56% in Tamil Nadu.
It rises from the Brahmagir range of Western
Ghats.
The river covers a distance of about 765 km and
flows through the state of Karnataka and Tamil
Nadu.
On its journey to the Bay of Bengal, the river is
joined by its tributaries, which include Kabini,

Shimsa, , Lokapavani, Bhavani, Lakshmana


Theertha, Hemavathi, Herangi and Amaravati.

Summit in Sanya, China on 14 April 2011.

New Development Bank
The New Development Bank (NDB), formerly
referred to as the BRICS Development Bank, is
a multilateral development bankestablished by
the BRICS states.

The initial authorized capital of the bank is $100


bln.
The bank is headquartered in Shanghai, China.
On 15 July 2014, the first day of the 6th BRICS
summit held in Fortaleza, Brazil, the BRICS states
signed the Agreement on the New Development
Bank, which makes provisions for the legal basis
of the bank.
On 11 May 2015, K. V. Kamath was appointed as
the President of the bank.

In the final match, Indian team defeated Thailand
by 41-31 score. With this, Indian women’s kabaddi
team has won the title for the record fifth time in
succession.
The Asian Beach Games (ABG) is a multi-sport
event to be held every two years among athletes
representing countries from Asia. The games are
regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia. The first
games was held in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia.

Union Cabinet approves ratification of


the Paris Agreement

The Union Cabinet has given its approval to ratify


the Paris Agreement (on Climate Change) on
Gandhi Jayanti i.e. on 2nd October 2016. The
Paris Agreement was adopted by 185 nations in
December 2015.
India had signed the agreement in New York in
April 2016.
So far, 191 countries have signed the agreement.

The Paris treaty on Climate Change will come into


force when 55 countries contributing to 55 % of
total global emission ratify the agreement.

So far, 61 countries have deposited their


instruments of ratification, approval or acceptance
accounting in total for 47.79% of the total global
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

India’s decision to ratify the agreement will take


the number of cumulative level of emission of
countries that have ratified the agreement so far to
51.89%.

Paris Agreement gives thrust to the global actions


to address climate change and pertains to post-
2020 climate actions. In the pre-2020 period,
developed countries are to act as per Kyoto
Protocol

IWT is a water-distribution treaty between India


and Pakistan. It brokered by the World Bank (then
the International Bank for Reconstruction and
Development).

The treaty deals with sharing of water of six


rivers — Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and
Jhelum between the two countries.
It was signed by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal
Nehru and President of Pakistan Ayub Khan in
Karachi on September 19, 1960.
As per treaty, control over three eastern rivers —
Ravi, Beas and Sutlej was given to India. While
control over three western rivers — Indus, Jhelum
and Chenab was given to Pakistan.
It allows India to use only 20% of the water of
Indus river, which flows through it first, for
irrigation, power generation and transport.
India wins historic 500th Test against

India has won the test match against New Zealand


by 197-runs in their historic 500th cricket Test in
Kanpur.
India is the 4th country to play 500 Tests in a
format which has 10 participants. Others are
England (played 976 test matches), Australia

River dolphins are found in Ganga and


Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
It has been declared endangered species and is
protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife
Protection Act, 1972.
This fresh water dolphin species are practically
blind. They rely on bio-sonar method to move
around and catch their prey. It is the National
Aquatic Animal of India.

India, France ink deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets

India and France has signed an Inter-


Governmental Agreement for the purchase of 36
Rafale fighter jets at a cost of 7.87 billion Euros.
This is the first fighter aircraft deal signed by India
with other country since the purchase of Sukhoi
aircrafts from Russia in the late 1990’s.
