2.0 FIELD WOR1<S
2.1 General
The field works were generally carried out in accordance with BS 5930: 1999 "Code of Practice for Site Investigation" and as directed by the client.
The Borehole Location Plan for proposed soil investigation works is shown in Figure 2.1. The co-ordinates and reduced levels of the boreholes are also presented in respective borelogs in Appendix-A [A-5].
2.2 Description of Field Investigation
2.2.1 Drilling
This investigation was performed using rotary drilling rig. A cutting tool was attached to the drilling rod to drill through the soils, which produces 100mm diameter borehole. Circulated mud water was pumped through the hollow rods into the hole to stabilize the borehole and to wash out the soil debris (resulted due to drilling) to the ground surface by pressure. Partial casing was used to stabilize the borehole side apart from using mud circulation. A sketch giving the illustration of boring work is presented in Figure 2.2. Trial pits of size 0.1 x 1.0 x 1.Om depth was generally excavated at every borehole location. The boreholes were terminated at the depths as suggested by the client.
During the investigation, a site log was kept by the Geoteclmical site supervisor to record soil descriptions, stratum changes, 8PT and coring field records.
2.2.2 Undisturbed Sampling
Undisturbed samples were generally collected at the depth of 3.0m intervals, unless otherwise specified by the client. Before a sample was taken, the bottom of the borehole was cleaned. Each sample was then collected using a 75 mm diameter by 750rnm long 'Shelby' type thin wall sample tube driven by hydraulic push. For hard soil where pushing is not possible, samples were collected by driving with hammer using open drive sampler. After a sample was retrieved from borehole, it was immediately labeled and sealed with wax at both ends before sending to laboratory.
2.2.3 Standard Penetration Testing
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were generally performed 1.5m interval, unless otherwise specified by the client. A sketch illustrating the test procedure is furnished in Figure 2.3.
Once the borehole reached the required test depth, the borehole was cleaned by flushing with water/mud before starting the test. The test was performed by using a split barrel type sampler with a 50.8 nun external and 34.9 mm internal diameter. The test was conducted in three stages, where each stage consisted of driving the sampler 150 nun into the soil by the use of a free fall 63.5 kg hammer (or monkey). The hammer was dropped from a height of 760 mm on to an anvil connected to the sampler by rods. The number of blows required for each l50mm penetration was noted and the final N-value is reported as the total number of

blows required to achieve the last 300 mm of penetration, the initial ISO mrn of penetration being to seat the sampler and by-pass any disturbance. If, however, 100 blows were reached before a penetration of 300 mrn was achieved, the test was stopped and the penetration achieved recorded.
2.2.4 Rock Coring
As instructed by the consultant, the coring was performed in boreholes BH2 & BH3. It was carried out by using surface set diamond bit and NMLC triple tube core barrel, which produces a nominal core and hole diameter of S2rrnn and 76mm, respectively.
After taking out coring tool from borehole, the rock samples were removed carefully from core barrel, The core sample was immediately wrapped and sealed in se1f-clinging plastic sheet and was properly placed in a standard timber core box. The core recovery, RQD, colour, fracture condition, weathering grade, etc. were recorded before taking photograph of the core. The rock core photographs are furnished in Appendix-A [A-6].
2.2.5
Installation and Monitoring of Water Standpipe
2.2.5.1
Instal1ation of Water Standpipe
Water standpipe was installed in the borehole at the depths specified by the client.
After the borehole was terminated, cement & bentonite was grouted to approximately SOcm below the required installation depth of the water standpipe. Clean sand filter of SOcm was placed directly above this backfill and the standpipe complete with PVC cap and Nylon mesh was lowered into the borehole. Clean sand filter was again backfilled into the borehole to about 1.Om below the ground surface, so as to completely cover the perforated section of the standpipe. Bentonite pellet seal of about O.3-0.Sm was placed above the clean sand filter. And then local soil & cement mortar plug was placed over this up to the ground leveL A typical installation detail of a water standpipe is furnished in Figure 2.4.
2.2.5.2
Monitoring of Ground Water Levels
The water standpipe was monitored using an electric type dip meter to measure the change in water levels during the investigation period. The detailed results of water level monitoring are presented in graphical as well as in tabular form in Appendix-B [B-2]. A summary ofwater level observations is presented below:

2.2.6 Monitoring of Daily Water Level
Daily water levels were monitored generally at each borehole twice a day during the site investigation period, using an electric type dip meter, to measure the change in water levels in the borehole during drilling. It should be noted that these water levels wouldn't represent the ground water table, as these values are affected by the water used in rotary drilling. The readings are shown in respective borelogs in Appendix-A [A-8].
3.0 LABORATORY TESTING
3.1 General
The various laboratory tests were performed on rock samples based on the testing schedule approved by the consultant. The tests related to mechanical properties were performed in Eeon Geotech Laboratory, The quantities of laboratory tests are summarized in Table 1.1.
3.2 Code of Practice
The laboratory tests were performed in accordance with the British Standard Code of Practice BS 1377 (1990) and as per terms of accreditation under the Singapore Accreditation Council - Singapore Laboratory Accreditation Scheme. The summaries and detailed test results are presented in Appendix-C. The results are also presented in respective borehole logs in Appendix-A [A-5].
3.3 Physical Properties
3.3.1 Moisture Content
To measure moisture content, a weighed specimen is taken from an undisturbed sample and placed in a tin, where it is oven dried at 105-110·C for 18-24 hours. The soil is weighted after the drying and the weight afwater is calculated simply by subtracting the two values. The moisture content is then defined as the percentage of the weight of water over weight of dry soil.
3.3.2 Bulk and Dry Density
The bulle density is the measured weight of a solid cylindrical soil specimen taken from an undisturbed sample divided by its volume. The dry density was calculated from bulk density and moisture content.
3.3.3 Particle Density
The particle density of a specimen is determined in accordance to BS 1377 using an oven dried representative portion of the undisturbed sample. The particle density is defmed as the ratio of the weight of soil to the water needed to displace the soil particles.
G09
SECT1/H15
3.3.4 Atterberg Limits
The liquid limit of a specimen is derived using the cone penetrometer method as to BS 1377. The plastic limit is defined as the moisture content of a specimen at the point where it can be satisfactorily rolled into a 3mm diameter thread with just starting to crumble. The soils' plasticity index is then derived by subtracting the plastic limit from the liquid limit. All Atterberg limit tests are carried out on soil in its natural state,
3.3.5 Grain Size Analysis
The grain size analysis has been carried out utilizing both sieve and hydrometer analysis.
The sieve analysis was carried out by wet sieving method in which the material was first washed through a 2 mm test sieve nested in a 63 urn test sieve. The soils retained in the sieves were then dried in an oven. The dried soils were then sieved by dry sieving by passing the soils through a series of square mesh sieves, which become progressively finer down to 63 lAm mesh. Each fraction thus collected was then weighed and the percentage retained on each sieve was calculated by dividing individual weights by the total sample weight.
The soils passing through 63 urn mesh was analyzed by sedimentation using hydrometer method. The hydrometer method involves measuring the rate of settlement of fme particles suspended in a solution. Utilizing the principle of Stokes' law, particle size can be directly related to its rate of settlement in a fluid such as water. From this process, the particle diameter and percentage finer is calculated.
3.4 Mechanical Properties
3.4.1 Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) Triaxial Test
This test is generally performed as a set of three single stage tests (UU). However, if the sample is not enough, the test is conducted using two or single (multistage) specimen. The general testing procedure is as explained below.
With the three single stage tests, three specimens were extracted from a single undisturbed sample, and was trimmed and cut to a length to diameter ratio is about two. The specimens were then weighed before putting the rubber membrane and placing into triaxial cell. Cell pressures of 0.50'", o., and 2crv (where cry is total overburden pressure at the sampling depth) were applied to the three specimens followed by shearing under undrained conditions at a constant rate of strain (usually 2% per minute). Axial load and displacement were recorded at regular intervals until a maximum deviator stress, or 20% of strain is reached. For tests with two specimens, cell pressure of crv and 2cr" were used.
For a multistage test with single specimen, the cell pressure was increased twice during the test at the point when the maximum deviator stress was imminent.
G1D
SECT1JH16
3.4.2 Consolidated Undrained (CU) Triaxial Test
The CD test was carried out in three stages, e.g., saturation, consolidation and shearing. In the first stage, the sample was saturated by applying backpressure. The sample was then consolidated in the triaxial cell, with the drainage valves open, under the confining pressure to bring the specimen to the state of effective stress required for carrying out the compression test. After consolidation, the specimen was sheared under undrained condition. The shearing stage was similar to unconsolidated undrained (UU) test, but with much lower rate of strain to allow for the pore pressure to equalize. The pore pressure was measured during the shearing stage thus enabling the determination of effective stress parameters.
This test is generally performed as a set of three single stage tests. However, if the sample is not enough, the test is conducted using two or single (multistage) specimen. The three cell pressures correspond to O.Ser'v, o'; and 2d v, where 0' v is effective overburden pressure. For a multistage test, the shearing was stopped when the peak deviator stress was imminent, and the consolidation and shearing stages were repeated for the next cell pressure.
3.4.3 Oedometer Consolidation Test
Selected undisturbed soil specimen was prepared in 19nnn thick slice of SOmm diameter and placed into the Consolidation Ring. The specimen was then set in a consolidation loading frame and subjected to a number of loading stages using calibrated dead weights and compression of the specimen was recorded. After reaching the final stage of loading, unloading was done in stages. A cycle of unloading and reloading was done before reaching the final stage. Various consolidation properties, e.g., compression index (Cs), co-efficient of volume compressibility (m.), co-efficient of consolidation (c.) etc are obtained from this test. k, was calculated from c, and my, and was corrected for 20· in case the test temperature is different.
3.5 Chemical Analysis of Water Samples
Chemical analyses of water samples were performed in accordance with BS1377 (1990). The tests were performed by Lab Services Pte Ltd. The parameters analyzed include determination of pH value Sulphate (803) and Chloride (Cl).
The results are presented in Appendix-C (C-2) and summarized below:

8.0 GEOTECHNICAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The design considerations given below are general in nature. A detailed analysis needs to be performed based on the actual loadings. As seen from the bore logs, the subsoil at this site consists of backfill soils underlain by various deposits of different soil types. The pile foundations are to be proposed for this site.
8.1 Pile Foundations
The soil design parameters for bored piles are given in Table 8.1. Layers have been identified based on the soil type and their strength. The design ultimate unit skin friction (fu) and ultimate unit end bearing (qu) values are also furnished in the table. These values are based on the field and laboratory test results with due considerations to local practices, recommendations of US Navy Design Manual (DM-7.2) and method suggested by Reese and O'Neill (1988).
8.1.1 Pile Capacities
The ultimate pile capacities have been estimated as follows:
Ultimate Pile Capacity = Sum of skin friction for various layers + end bearing
Where, As =surface area of pile for each layer = pile perimeter x layer thickness Ap=pile tip (point) area
For estimating allowable pile capacity, a factor of safety of 2.0 for ultimate skin friction and 3.0 for ultimate end bearing has been used.
The pile capacity curves, giving allowable pile capacity (in compression) against length, have been generated based on the above considerations. The allowable geotechnical capacities for 600 mm, 800 mm and 1000 mm diameter RC bored pile are presented in Plates lA-IC, 2A-2C, .. , and 9A-9C for boreholes SBHI, "', SBH4, DBHl, .. " and DBH5 respectively. The capacities have been generated for pile lengths up to the borehole termination depth.
Table 8.2 gives a summary of estimated pile length, geotechnical capacity (in compression) and structural capacity (based on concrete grade of G35). For estimating structural capacities, the effect of steel reinforcement has been neglected. The recommended pile length in Table 8.2 have been arrived by matching the geotechnical capacity to the structural capacity. However, if the actual pile loads are less, the pile lengths may be reduced,
8.1.2 Negative Skin Friction
Based on the laboratory consolidation test results & soil profile encounter in this investigation, negative skin friction is not expected, as no under-consolidated soft clay is present at tins site.
• Ref. Plate I to 12 for Geotechnical Capacities .
•• Structural Capacity "" 0.25fcuAc ; Assumed Concrete Grade G35, feu"" 35 MPa . ... Allowable load is the minimum of Geotechnical and Structural Capacity.
8.1.3 Spacing and Efficiency of Pile Group
A minimum spacing between individual piles of 3 times the pile diameter in a pile group is recommended for fi:iction piles, However, for piles in rock, spacing may be reduced to 2times the pile diameter with efficiency factor of 1.
'" ,.-,. ...
v· '/ t
_..IL.
SECT1/H27
However, if the piles are terminated within top residual soils, the piles will derive its capacity predominantly ibm friction, and in such case the allowable capacity of pile groups may be determined by the following equation:
Qg = E xN x qs
where,
qs capacity for a single pile N = number of piles in group
E efficiency factor
= 1- e [ (n-l)m + (m-l)n]/90mn Uniform Building Code
where,
n = number of piles in row m = number of rows
EI = arc tan dis (degrees) D = pile diameter (m)
S = pile spacing (center to center in meters)
8.1.4 Precautions during Pile Installation
The pile hole shall be cleaned properly before pouring concrete in order not to have any loose material at borehole bottom, to achieve mobilization of end bearing.
The time between drilling and the concreting shall be kept minimum in order to reduce the gradual softening ofthe borehole wall, reducing the skin friction.
8.1.5 Initial Pile Load Test
It is recommended to establish the estimated allowable pile capacities by conducting initial pile load test on test pile.
