GERUNDS AND INFINITIVE

What are Gerunds?


A gerund is a verb in its ing (present participle) form that functions as a noun that names an activity rather than a
person or thing. Any action verb can be made into a gerund.
 It is used as the subject of the sentence
EX Playing tennis is fun
 A gerund is the –ing form of a verb used as a noun.
EX We enjoy playing tennis
 A gerund is used in the same ways as the object of preposition
EX I always go swimming on Saturdays
He is excited about playing tennis
 Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or infinitive but with a change in meaning:
EX He remembered sending the fax. (He remembered the act of send the fax)
He remembered to send the fax. (He remembered the fax and sent it.)
Negative form: not precedes a gerund

EX We talked about not going to the meeting, but finally decided we should go

VERBS THAT ARE FOLLOWED BY THE –ING FORM (GERUND).

If these verbs are followed by another verb, we use the –ing form (gerund) of the second verb:

I. Fill in the blanks the correct verb according with the kind of verb.
