Assignment
 Estimate the following quantities:
o Height of bench/table
o Length of room, width of pencil end/pencil lead
o Volume of room, volume of water in a cup, volume of water in an Olympic sized swimming pool
and in a bath
o Mass of a person, mass of a nail, mass of a cruise liner
o Time between heartbeats, period of a pendulum
o Electric current in a cooker element
o Force on a tennis ball when served
o Acceleration of a jet plane when taking off.
 Analyse the following upthrust situations:
o An empty, sealed water bottle is held so that it is completely immersed in water
o A ship floating on the sea
o A hot air balloon rising upwards
o A falling brick
o A submarine remaining at a fixed distance below the surface of the sea
The relative sizes of the all the forces should be considered for each of these.

 Consider these situations:

o The brakes of a bicycle causing speed to be reduced when travelling downhill
o Pushing a large box across i) a very rough floor, ii) a smooth floor
o Walking or running i) normally, ii) on a very slippery surface
o A ball bearing falling through a very viscous liquid
o The factors affecting the terminal velocity of a free falling object
o Imagine a world where friction didn’t exist!
In each case, analyse the part played by friction or viscous forces and write down the reasons why
friction or viscosity is important, and whether it is a problem or a necessity.
