Tensile Test Report

The following Figure shows a tensile test specimen that is tested in a Universal Test Machine to determine
its tensile mechanical properties. The specimen is made of SAE 1020 annealed steel. The attached Excel
File contains the force applied on the specimen and the elongation caused by the force. Given the
information in the Figure and the Excel file, you are required to do the following:

6.35 mm

38.1 mm

Thickness= 3.18 mm

1. Draw the force-elongation diagram.

2. Draw the stress-strain diagram.
3. Identify the regions in the stress-strain diagram.
4. Find the modulus of elasticity of the tested material and compare it with other types of steel.
5. SAE 1020 annealed steel is used in different mechanical applications, such as car engine shafts and
camshafts. To accept the materials, the material’s properties should be as follows:

A. Tensile Strength ≥ 410 MPa

B. Yield Strength ≥ 290 MPa
Discuss if the tested material will be accepted for this application or not.
