Alaska, northwest of Canada, is the largest and most sparsely populated U.S. state. It's 
known for its diverse terrain of open spaces, mountains and forests, with abundant wildlife 
and many small towns. It’s a destination for outdoor activities like skiing, mountain biking 
and kayaking. Massive Denali National Park is home to Denali (formerly called Mount 
McKinley), North America’s highest peak.  
About the flag  
Alaska adopted the flag for official state use in 1959. The blue field represents the sky, 
the sea, and mountain lakes, as well as Alaska's wildflowers. Emblazoned on the flag are 
eight gold stars: seven from the constellation Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper.

Hawaii, a U.S. state, is an isolated volcanic archipelago in the Central Pacific. Its islands are 
renowned for their rugged landscapes of cliffs, waterfalls, tropical foliage and beaches with 
gold, red, black and even green sands. Of the 6 main islands, Oahu has Hawaii’s biggest city 
and capital, Honolulu, home to crescent Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor's WWII memorials.

Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 - 1893) The flag was designed at the 
request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and blue that represent 
the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to 
honor Hawaii's friendship with the British.

Maine, the northeasternmost U.S. state, is known for its rocky coastline, maritime history 
and nature areas like the granite and spruce islands of Acadia National Park. Moose are 
plentiful in Baxter State Park, home to Mt. Katahdin, endpoint of the Appalachian Trail. 
Lighthouses such as the candy-striped beacon at West Quoddy Head, dot the coast, as do 
lobster shacks and sandy beaches like Ogunquit and Old Orchard.

The flag of the state of Maine features the state coat of arms on a blue field. In the 
center of the shield, a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represent 
the traditional reliance on agriculture and the sea by the state. The North Star represents

The flag of the state of Connecticut is a white baroque shield with three grapevines, each 
bearing three bunches of purple grapes on a field of azure blue. The banner below the 
shield reads "Qui Transtulit Sustinet", Latin for "He who transplanted still sustains"), 
Connecticut's state motto.

Maryland's flag bears the arms of the Calvert and Crossland families. Calvert was the 
family name of the Lords Baltimore who founded Maryland, and their colors of gold and

Virginia, a southeastern U.S. state, stretches from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian 
Mountains, with a long Atlantic coastline. It's one of the 13 original colonies, with historic 
landmarks including Monticello, founding father Thomas Jefferson’s iconic Charlottesville 
plantation. The Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg are living-history museums 
reenacting Colonial and Revolutionary-era life.

Virginia State Flag. A deep blue field contains the seal of Virginia with the Latin motto " 
Sic Semper Tyrannis" - "Thus Always to Tyrants". Adopted in 1776. The two figures are 
acting out the meaning of the motto. Both are dressed as warriors.

West Virginia is an eastern U.S. state in the tree-covered Appalachian Mountains. The town of 
Harpers Ferry, where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River, is the site of a famous 
Civil War–era raid. Surrounded by a national historical park, the town looks as it did in the

displays a rock containing the date June 20, 1863, the day West Virginia became a state.

Mountains in the east, with Frankfort the state capital. The state's largest city, Louisville, is

Saturday in May. The race is preceded by a 2-week festival and celebrated in the Kentucky 
Derby Museum year-round.

Ohio is a midwestern U.S. state stretching from the Ohio River and Appalachian Mountains in 
the south to Lake Erie in the north. On the shores of the lake is the city of Cleveland, site of 
the Cleveland Museum of Art and its renowned collection of European paintings and 
especially Asian art. Cleveland is also home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, 
and close to expansive Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Ohio's state flag was adopted in 1902. The Ohio burgee, as the swallowtail design is 
properly called, was designed by John Eisemann. The large blue triangle represents 
Ohio's hills and valleys, and the stripes represent roads and waterways.

Indianapolis 500, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In the capital, Indianapolis,

Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Canal Walk promenade and the Indianapolis Museum of

North Carolina is a southeastern U.S. state with a landscape ranging from Atlantic Ocean 
beaches to the Appalachian Mountains. Charlotte, the state’s largest city, is home to the 
NFL’s Carolina Panthers and museums such as the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The state motto 
(“First in Flight”) honors the Wright Brothers, who flew their first plane in Kitty Hawk on the 
Outer Banks, barrier islands lined with popular beaches.

fired. To the north is the Grand Strand, a roughly 60-mile stretch of beachfront known for golf 
courses and the vacation town Myrtle Beach.

South Carolina's Flag. The state flag of South Carolina was adopted on January 28, 
1861. The crescent symbol represents the silver emblem worn on the caps of South 
Carolina troops during the revolutionary war, and the background color matches the blue 
of their uniforms.

Georgia is a southeastern U.S. state whose terrain spans coastal beaches, farmland and 
mountains. Capital city Atlanta is home of the Georgia Aquarium and the Martin Luther King 
Jr. National Historic Site, dedicated to the African-American leader’s life and times. The city 
of Savannah is famed for its 18th- and 19th-century architecture and leafy public squares. 
Augusta hosts the Masters golf tournament. 

 
The Georgia flag has three red and white stripes and the state coat of arms on a blue 
field in the upper left corner. Thirteen stars surrounding the seal denotes Georgia's 
position as one of the original thirteen colonies. 
 
Florida- Tallahassee, Rick Scott

Florida is the southeasternmost U.S. state, with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of 
Mexico on the other. It has hundreds of miles of beaches. The city of Miami is known for its 
Latin-American cultural influences and notable arts scene, as well as its nightlife, especially 
in upscale South Beach. Orlando is famed for theme parks, including Walt Disney World.

War battle.

Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee. The blue circle around the stars 
represents the unity of the "Grand Divisions" of the state. The blue bar at the edge of the

Union." The dates on the seal, 1818 and 1868, represent the year Illinois became a state

The Texas Flag Code assigns the following symbolism to the colors of the Texas flag:

Oklahoma - Oklahoma City, Mary Fallin

Oklahoma is a midwestern U.S. state whose diverse landscape includes the Great Plains, hills 
lakes and forests. Oklahoma City, the capital, is home to the National Cowboy and Western

ancestors. The blue field comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the civil 
war. The center shield is the battle shield of an Osage warrior. It is made of buffalo hide

Wisconsin is a midwestern U.S. state with coastlines on 2 Great Lakes (Michigan and

Harley-Davidson Museum, displaying classic motorcycles. Several beer companies are based 
in Milwaukee, and many offer brewery tours.

Wisconsin State Flag. Starting at the top of a shield on a dark blue field is the state 
motto "Forward". Below it is a badger the state animal. A sailor and miner show that the 
people work on water and land. 
 
Minnesota -Saint Paul, Mark Dayton

Minnesota is a midwestern U.S. state bordering Canada and Lake Superior, the largest of the 
Great Lakes. The state contains more than 10,000 other lakes, including Lake Itasca, the 
Mississippi River’s primary source. The “Twin Cities” of Minneapolis and state capital Saint 
Paul are dense with cultural landmarks like the Science Museum of Minnesota and the 
Walker Art Center, a modern art museum.

Around the state seal is a wreath of the state flower, the lady slipper. Three dates are 
woven into the wreath: 1858, the year Minnesota became a state; 1819, the year Fort 
Snelling was established; and 1893, the year the official flag was adopted. Nineteen 
stars ring the wreath. The largest star represents Minnesota.

Helena has been the capital of Montana Territory since 1875 and the state of Montana 
since 1889. In 1902, the Montana State Capitol was completed. A large portion of the 
conflict between Marcus Daly and William Andrews Clark (the Copper Kings) was over 
the location of the state capital.

Montana is a western state defined by its diverse terrain ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the
Great Plains. Its wide-open spaces include Glacier National Park, a vast wilderness preserve
that passes into Canada. The park’s many snow-capped peaks, lakes and alpine hiking trails are
showcased along its famed Going-to-the-Sun Road, stretching 50 miles.

The state flag of Montana has the image of the Montana state seal centered on a blue 
field with the word "MONTANA" in golden yellow above the seal. The seal includes the 
Rocky Mountains, a plow, shovel, forests, plow, crossed pick and shovel in front of the
