Hawaii, a U.S. state, is an isolated volcanic archipelago in the Central Pacific. Its islands are
renowned for their rugged landscapes of cliffs, waterfalls, tropical foliage and beaches with
gold, red, black and even green sands. Of the 6 main islands, Oahu has Hawaii’s biggest city
and capital, Honolulu, home to crescent Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor's WWII memorials.
About the flag
Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 - 1893) The flag was designed at the
request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and blue that represent
the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to
honor Hawaii's friendship with the British.

Maine, the northeasternmost U.S. state, is known for its rocky coastline, maritime history
and nature areas like the granite and spruce islands of Acadia National Park. Moose are
plentiful in Baxter State Park, home to Mt. Katahdin, endpoint of the Appalachian Trail.
Lighthouses such as the candy-striped beacon at West Quoddy Head, dot the coast, as do
lobster shacks and sandy beaches like Ogunquit and Old Orchard.

The flag of the state of Maine features the state coat of arms on a blue field. In the
center of the shield, a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represent
the traditional reliance on agriculture and the sea by the state. The North Star represents

Virginia State Flag. A deep blue field contains the seal of Virginia with the Latin motto "
Sic Semper Tyrannis" - "Thus Always to Tyrants". Adopted in 1776. The two figures are
acting out the meaning of the motto. Both are dressed as warriors.

West Virginia is an eastern U.S. state in the tree-covered Appalachian Mountains. The town of
Harpers Ferry, where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River, is the site of a famous
Civil War–era raid. Surrounded by a national historical park, the town looks as it did in the
19th century, with many of the buildings open to the public as living-history museums.
West Virginia State Flag. A white field is bordered in dark blue. West Virginia's flag
displays a rock containing the date June 20, 1863, the day West Virginia became a state.
The two men represent farming and mining.

houses, Old South plantations and Fort Sumter, where the Civil War’s opening shots were
fired. To the north is the Grand Strand, a roughly 60-mile stretch of beachfront known for golf
courses and the vacation town Myrtle Beach.

South Carolina's Flag. The state flag of South Carolina was adopted on January 28,
1861. The crescent symbol represents the silver emblem worn on the caps of South
Carolina troops during the revolutionary war, and the background color matches the blue
of their uniforms.

Georgia is a southeastern U.S. state whose terrain spans coastal beaches, farmland and

Around the state seal is a wreath of the state flower, the lady slipper. Three dates are
woven into the wreath: 1858, the year Minnesota became a state; 1819, the year Fort
Snelling was established; and 1893, the year the official flag was adopted. Nineteen

Helena has been the capital of Montana Territory since 1875 and the state of Montana
since 1889. In 1902, the Montana State Capitol was completed. A large portion of the
conflict between Marcus Daly and William Andrews Clark (the Copper Kings) was over
