Phys Ed 20/30 Olympics

Intro: In this unit students will be put into 4-5 separate teams. Each team will be responsible for
the instruction, implementation, oversight and follow-up to one of the games listed below.

Games: Handball, Line Lacrosse, Indoor Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Team Dodgeball (each group
will choose 1 game)

Roles: Each group member will be responsible for one of the following roles. Please submit a
report on all the aspects and considerations of each group members role of what they will be
responsible for in the unit (written or typed, approx. 1 paragraph)

1. Referees - Ref the game; minimum of 2 per game. Responsible for rulebook *All Rule
Books must be submitted when group 1 presents.
2. Reporter - Will submit a news report on the highlights of their action from their game
the day after their group presents. (approx. 1-2 pages)
3. Coaches – Will lead the teams in a warm-up and practice before the game. They are
responsible for a lesson plan outlining the details of the warm-up and explanations of
the drills that will be used to teach the critical skills of their game.
4. Scorekeeper – Keep score of each game. Create round robin tournament format draw
sheet and fill in accordingly.
5. TV Reporter – Interviews the player of the day, via video/smartphone.

Each team is responsible for:


1. Team name
2. Team coat of arms (logo) with motto.
3. Team Cheer
 The above 3 components need to be reflective of the makeup of your group. Your
group will submit a paper (approx. 1 page) explaining how and why each was chosen
based upon your group’s unique makeup. (Use similarities between group members
from the Getting Acquainted Assignment)
4. A developed lesson plan which includes: description of warm-up/drills with each item
explained, and its purpose detailed, an explanation of your game and rules, rulebook,
safety concerns and considerations, duties and responsibilities of each member.
5. Scoring and keeping track of results from their game in a Round Robin Tournament
between the 4 remaining teams (tournament sheet filled in).

4. Lesson plan with description of warm-ups, drills, safety considerations. (Coaches)
5. Roles Report- responsibilities and duties (who is doing what)
6. Round robin result sheet.
7. News report (next day after your group’s presentation)
8. TV Reporter interview with player (recorded on smartphone)

Scoring:
Each day that your team competes points will be awarded as follows:
1st: 10 points
2nd: 8 points
3rd: 5 points
4th: 3 points

Getting Acquainted Assignment:


In order to help get acquainted with your group, think of 5 questions (as a group) that you
would ask someone in order to get to know them. As a group, everyone is going to answer
these 5 questions out loud and you will need 1 person to record those answers.

Assessment:
- 70% for your groups presentation
- 20% for where you place in the entire Olympics (20% first, 15% second, 12% third, 9%
fourth and 6% fifth. Each day you have the chance to earn points on the leaderboard (1st
10 points, 2nd 8 points, 3rd 5 points, 4th 3 points.) The team that has the most points at
the end of the unit will receive the full 20 %.
- 10% participation and cooperation displayed throughout the unit.

Questions to ask when grading groups presentations:


Does the presenting group use an effective warm up? Does the presenting group have 1 or 2
drills that work on skills involved in their game? How well does the group transition through
their lesson? Does the group effectively explain safety and rules of their game? Are the games
refereed effectively? Are the results of the games recorded on a standings sheet? Quality of
team poster. Does the lesson plan include enough information to run an effective practice?
Does the TV report and interview summarize what happened during the tournament? Are all
possible rules explained?
