Subject Math

Grade Level 3rd

Learning Objective 3.14 The student will identify, describe, compare, and contract
characteristic of plane and solid geometric figures (circle, square,
rectangle, triangle, cube, rectangular prism, square pyramid, sphere,
Content

cone, and cylinder) by identifying relevant characteristics, including

the number angles, vertices, and edges, and the number and shape of
faces, using concrete models.
Activity The lesson will begin with a brief Instructional lesson. I will ask the
student what are shapes? And what shapes do you know of? I will
then put shapes on the board that I previously cut out and explain
what they are. (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, cube, rectangular
prism, square, pyramid, sphere, cone, and cylinder)
-students will be passed out cubes to every table. Using the cube, the
teacher will explain what angles, vertices, edges, corners, and faces.
-the students will have time to talk about what they learned with
classmate while the teacher comes around to ask every table
questions about the lesson
-class will participate in smartboard activities and teacher will
elaborate upon the lesson.
With the smartboard activity students will be called up one by one
to participate in the activity. The kids will be allowed to touch and
move the objects in the smart board. Some of the activities include
them identifying the shape along with faces, vertices, and edges of
that shape. They will also have an activity that they can put a
magnifying glass over the shape to identify it. I will also have some
kids come up at the end and draw certain shapes. For example, Can
you draw me a sphere? Can you draw me a shape with four corners?
Can I have a volunteer to draw a shape that has no corners?
-Students will then be given choices of different shapes to cut out.
Students will then get in groups of two (grouped with someone that.
Has a different shape then they have) to create a compare and
contrast graph of their shapes.
