“A crack young female flute quartet”

“Dazzling”

Michael Tumelty (The Herald)

Flutes en Route is Scotland’s foremost flute quartet. Winners of the 2008 RSAMD Governors’
Chamber Music Prize and members of the prestigious Live Music Now! scheme, they formed in
2007 at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. A dynamic ensemble within the
Scottish chamber music scene, they have given recitals all over the UK including a performance
for Prince Charles. Flutes en Route is committed to expanding the repertoire for this unusual
combination of instruments and has commissioned and premiered two new works since 2008.

Jo, Lee, Sarah and Yvonne work regularly as orchestral and chamber musicians, and have
worked with groups as diverse as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber
Orchestra, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, Northern Sinfonia and the pop group "McFly".
As soloists they have given numerous recital and concerto performances, and won prizes in the
Royal Overseas League, the Performing Australian Music Competition, Novgorod Russian
National Competition and the Jellinek Concerto Competition.

Education and outreach is important to Flutes en Route. In collaboration with Live Music Now!,
Flutes en Route recently planned, developed and implemented a pioneering musical storytelling
project with nursery children from across Scotland. Individual members of the group are trained
practitioners of the Kodály method, and have experience working with highly acclaimed
programmes, including the Philharmonia’s ‘Elastic Band’, the BBCSSO Merchant Sinfonia
scheme, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Wind Farm, NYCOS and Sistema Scotland.
