Part A (Module I and II)

1. What are the site conditions when ground improvement is required for foundations? (9)

2. Describe various methods of ground improvement suitable for cohesive soil? (9)

3. A clay layer 5m thick is consolidated with the help of drain well of diameter 30 cm

and spaced at 2.7m centre to centre. Determine the influence of the wells on the

average degree of consolidation at the time when the degree of consolidation in

the clay without wells would be equal to 20%. Make computations under two cases

of permeability (i) kr =kz or Cvr=Cvz and (ii) Kr = 5Kz or Cvr=5Cvz. (9)
