ALFA Announces Feb. 7 Outreach Activity

For National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

HICKORY, Jan. 23, 2018 – ALFA, a Hickory-based United Way agency that serves
nine counties and improves the health of people affected by HIV/AIDS, announces a special
outreach activity for Feb. 7, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

“A disproportionate number of African-Americans are affected by HIV,” said

Community Outreach Coordinator Bernadette Moss. “This annual day gives us the perfect
opportunity to reach out to the African-American community to provide free testing and
information.” 1 in 16 black men and 1 in 32 black women will contract HIV in their lifetime.

ALFA team members will be at Hickory’s Ridgeview Recreation Center, 700 1st St.
SW on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The testing, which takes less than 20
minutes, is free and totally confidential.

ALFA, the AIDS Leadership Foothills-Area Alliance, serves nine counties --

Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Lincoln, Watauga, and Wilkes.
ALFA’s mission is to improve the lives and health of those affected by HIV/AIDS, raise
awareness, and prevent transmission through education and testing.
