one of Jesus’ first disciples. His title “the Greater” distinguishes St. James from the Apostle
James. St. James was on the boat when Jesus arrived on the shores of the sea of Galilee and
called for the fisherman. St. James was one of the fishermen that when Jesus told them to drop
their nets and they filled their nets with fish. James was one of the few disciples called to witness
the Transfiguration. St. James then after the ascension spread the word of the Gospel all across
Israel. St. James was martyred because of his beliefs and following his Martyr his remains were
not allowed to be buried but some of his followers took him and buried him in Compostela,
Spain.
St. James the Greater Prayer
O glorious Apostle,
St. James, who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart
wast chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His glory on Mount Tabor,
and of His agony in Gethsemane;
thou, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory:
obtain for us strength and consolation in the unending warfare of this life,
that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus,
we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive the victor's crown in heaven.
Amen.
