Topic 8.4: Midpoint
In the figure, PQRS is a straight line, Point Q is the midpoint of
PS and R is the midpoint of QS.

Find out the coordinates of R by using own mathematic formula

or Geometer’s Sketchpad/ Geogebra/ MS Excel
Solution
Step 1
Find the Coordinate of S
2+𝑥 7+𝑦
( , )
2 2

[(2 + 𝑥 = 6 × 2) , (7 + 𝑦 = 5 × 2)]

[(𝑥 = 12 − 2), (𝑦 = 10 − 7)]

𝑆 = (10,3)

Step 2
Find the midpoint (The Coordinates of R) of Line QS
6 + 10 5 + 3
( , )
2 2

= R (8,4)
Final Answer

Introduction of Coordinate Geometry
A system of geometry where the position of points on the plane
is described using an ordered pair of numbers.

Definition
The coordinates of a point are a pair of numbers that define its
exact location on a two-dimensional plane. Recall that the
coordinate plane has two axes at right angles to each other,
called the x and y axis. The coordinates of a given point
represent how far along each axis the point is located.
Midpoint of a line joining two points?
A point on the line which is equidistant from two given points.

M is the midpoint of the line AB.

Midpoint Formula
Conclusion
We have conclude that the midpoint formula can be used to
solve the question above. By applying this midpoint formula, we
found that R located at coordinates (8,4) is the midpoint of Line
QS.

Coordinates is a compulsory mathematic topic for everyone

because we will use this basic knowledge on our daily life
application. For instance, we will use it on Global Positioning
System (GPS) to track a location or Weather Forecast usage.
