Importance of bearings

Bearings are provided in bridges to transmit the load from the super-structure to
the sub-structure in such a manner that the bearing stresses induced in the
substructure are within permissible limits.
They should also accommodate certain relative movements between the superstructure
and the sub structure.

Importance of bearings
The relative movements are due to one or more of the followings:
Longitudinal movement due to temperature variation;
Rotation due to deflection of the girders; and
Vertical movement due to sinking of support.
There can be movements due to shrinkage, pre-stressing and creep also.

Importance of bearings
These movements may be reversible or irreversible.
The reversible effects are usually cyclic and are due to temperature changes and
live loads.
Effect due to settlement of supports, prestressing, creep and shrinkage are
irreversible.

Types of bearings
Bearings are of two categories : Fixed bearing and expansion bearing.
Fixed bearing allow rotation but restrict translation.
while, expansion bearings allow both rotation and longitudinal translation.

Different designs are possible for each of these two categories.
