Daily Lesson Plan

Name: Hillary Hersman Date: 3/26, 3/27

Subject: Math Topic: Subtraction

Grade: 1st Length of Lesson: 90min days

The Big Idea:

Standard: Operation and Algebraic Thinking

Cluster: Add and Subtract within 20

Objective: M.1.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction
within 10 and use strategies such as

 counting on;
 making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14);
 decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 –
1 = 9);
 using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing
that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8= 4); and
 creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 +7 by
creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Specific Objective: Students will perform at a class average of 80% mastery to show
understanding of the content area.

1
Materials:
Beads
Fuzzy Sticks
Subtraction Cards

Direct Instruction:
MONDAY
Practice subtraction with students and cover the concept of subtraction once again. Read the
subtraction poem with students. Model subtraction using students by standing them up and
sitting them down as we subtract. Instruct students on how they will use their fuzzy sticks and
beads to model subtraction problems.

TUESDAY:
Once again demonstrate to students how to subtract using their fuzzy stick and beads. Write
numbers 0-10 on the board and allow students to choose 2 numbers for the teacher to
demonstrate subtraction with. Stress that the biggest number comes first in a subtraction
problem.

Guided Practice:
MONDAY: Give student a fuzzy stick and 10 beads each. Give students time to put their 10
beads on their stick. Next, give the class a few subtraction problems to model using their stick
and beads.
TUESDAY: Give student a fuzzy stick and 10 beads each. Give students time to put their 10
beads on their stick. Next, give the class a few subtraction problems to model using their stick
and beads.

Lesson Closure:
TUESDAY: Allow for students to work with a partner to create their own subtraction problems
within 10. One student will create the problem while the other student models it using their
manipulative.

Independent Practice:
TUESDAY
Give students a worksheet to complete. Students may use their sticks and beads to assist them
in completing the worksheet.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed on a subtraction quiz at the end of the week. Students would
complete the quiz with 80% accuracy to show mastery of subtraction within 10.
