Materials: The Book What Can You Do with a Paleta?, white sheets of paper, markers, crayons, color
pencils etc., paleta

Standard: CCSS.ELA- Literacy. R L. 1.4 Ask and answer questions about “Spanish” words in the
book to identify the meaning of the terms and phrases.

Objective: Students will be able to translate key terms from Spanish to English using illustrations
from the book with 95% accuracy.

Procedure: Introduce students to the book What Can You Do with a Paleta? by Carmen Tafolla. We
would pay close attention to the illustration on the front of the book. I would ask “Do any of you know
what a paleta is?” “How many of you have eaten a paleta?” All together we would discuss what we think
the book is going to be about.

Read: Give students a paleta to enjoy. While students are eating their paleta, teacher will read the book
aloud to class.

Discuss: At the end of the book, both teacher and students will discuss whether predictions on the book
were accurate. We will also discuss the illustrations in the book and what particular items, or characters
stood out the most.

1. What are some similarities between the barrio in the book and your own barrio?
2. What was given to the senora at the fruit stand?
3. Does everyone’s barrio look the same? Yes/No. Why?
4. What did you do with your paleta?
Activities:
1. Students will be given a term and definition worksheet, in which they will match given terms from
Spanish to English that were heard throughout the book.

2. Students will illustrate a picture of their own barrio by including people, cars, senses, etc. that they
have in their own barrio. Students will include a 1-3 sentence explanation at the bottom of their
illustration on what makes their barrio special. They will then share and compare the similarities and
differences that their own barrio has to that of their classmates.

Evaluation: Teacher checks student’s work by going over the key term matching worksheet and
viewing each barrio illustration students share with the class.
