This assignment showed how coaches are forced to deal with budgetary issues each year.
Each year coach is supposed to prepare a budget that accurately reflects the needs for the
upcoming year. Each year coaches are required to also make sacrifices when creating their
budget. This assignment allowed me to understand how expensive swimming is and how
stressful it is for a coach to make a budget each year. to complete this assignment, I spoke with
my coach, Cody Skinner, about how he approaches creating a budget and how difficult he found
it. He let me know about some of the things that are needed versus what are some of the things
that are wants that can be purchased later on. He also reminded me that every swim team has a
sponsorship deal with a suit company which helps lower the costs of virtually everything. His
Before preparing my budget I knew what supplies and equipment I would need to start a
team, but I did not know how expensive these items would be in bulk. When preparing this
budget, I found it best to have a sponsorship with the suit company, Arena. Many teams over the
country have suit sponsorships and it really does cut down on the cost of all items.
Travel for both teams ended up to be similar because in a traditional swim team setting
both the men and the women’s teams train together and attend meets together as well. Equipment
for both teams was also the same because both teams use the same equipment as they do similar
practices. Both teams would travel in seperate minibuses and there would still be room to fit all
The differences begin in the team meet swimsuits and the technical swimsuits used at the
Championship meet at the end of the season. The men’s meet suits were ten dollars cheaper per
suit than the women’s suits. This is probably due to the fact that the women’s suits have more
material than the men’s suits and require more stitching. The women’s technical suits are also
$70.00 more expensive per suit than the men’s suits. According to Arena ( a swimsuit brand),
women’s technical suits require more engineering due to the fact that they cover more area. That
engineering includes keeping the seams closed together with a special high technological glue
and finding a way to make the suit not only comfortable in the legs but in the shoulders as well.
The suit also requires more fabric than the men’s suit.
When researching salaries for coaches, I found data in the NCAA Job Market. The
NCAA job market is set up to where individuals can search for jobs in different aspects of the
NCAA, coaching, graduate assistants, NCAA personnel and athletic directors. The website offers
statistics on each career including salaries, job competition and education levels. The statistics
gave a median for both head coaches and assistant coaches. In my research I found that coaches
that were apart of the men’s teams were generally paid more at the Division 1 Level except if the
coach has won national championships and is a highly regarded coach. When researching
coaching salaries at the Division II and Division III levels they seemed to be equal. When
researching salaries, I also found it to be more common to have a head coach coach both the
Preparing a budget for both teams was an eye-opening experience. Budgeting is not only
important for each sport but shows a school how much money a program needs in order to
