Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Dividing and Conquering

Objectives:
● Students will be able to recognize the quotient, divisor, and dividend.
● Students will be able to identify the missing factor of a division problem.

State Standards:
● 3.ATO.2 Use concrete objects, drawings and symbols to represent division without
remainders and explain the relationship among the whole number quotient (i.e., 0 – 10),
divisor (i.e., 0 – 10), and dividend.
● 3.ATO.4 Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation
relating three whole numbers when the unknown is a missing factor, product, dividend,
divisor, or quotient.
Context: In the last standard, the students learned about multiplication. This lesson will teach the
students about numbers “Fact Families.” The students will learn the definitions of the words
quotient, dividend, and divisor. The previous knowledge the students will bring into this lesson is
their ability to multiply, add, and subtract. If a student can add, subtract, and multiply then they
can divide. After this lesson students will learn how to divide with word problems. On their
exams, there will be word problems so they have to learn how to divide with word problems.

Materials:
● iPad and headphones: To watch a video on, take a quiz on the video, and play an app on
division.
● Math notebook and pencil: Take notes on at the beginning of class. Students will refer
back to notes while doing their activities.
● Worksheet and poster: Students will create a division house. The worksheet asks the
students questions. The student will have to divide to figure out the answer, then draw the
answer on the poster to create a house. For example: To find the number of windows on
your house, divide the day of the month you were born by the number of kids in your
family. The answers will vary which means every picture will look different.

Procedures:
Introduction (25 minutes): I will begin the lesson by introducing the topic of the today’s lesson,
division. I will lead the students in a lecture on the division. We will take notes and practice a
few problems together. I will then explain to the students that we will be working in groups. I
will explain the different stations and will divide them into groups. My top students will be
paired with my average and bottom students. The students who are still having trouble
understanding will go to the teacher-directed station first. My advanced students will move on to
the collaborative station. The students who are in the middle will go to the independent digital
station.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this station the students will go over their notes, and answer
questions that the students have. After answering their questions, we will go over a practice
worksheet. If the students do not complete this worksheet in the 15 minutes then they will have
to complete the worksheet for homework. They will then move on to the next station.

Collaborative (15 minutes): In this station the students will be designing a house by dividing.
The assignment consists of a worksheet with various questions that the students has to answer.
The answer to those questions will tell the students how many doors, windows, bricks, etc. to
draw on their house. In the end the students in the groups can compare pictures, and discuss why
their pictures look different.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): In this station the students will have an iPad and will look at a
video on BrainPop (https://www.brainpop.com/math/numbersandoperations/division/). The
video will explain the definitions of their vocabulary words. After the students watch the short
video, they will plan an app called “Division for Children.” They will play the game and see who
can get the highest score.

Closure (15 minutes): The class will end this lesson coming together as one big group. We will
discuss the different stations, and students can look at different pictures of the houses they drew.
We will then play a game called Kahoot. This game has twelve questions. The top five students
will get to choose something out the candy jar.

Rationales:
(Division for Children): This piece of multimedia is used in the independent station. This app
benefits the lesson because it helps the students to fully understand how to divide. It gives the
students’ practice, and will help the students get prepared for their tests. This app supports my
objective because it helps the students practice division. This app is of high quality because of
the motivation to win the game.

(BrainPop): This piece of multimedia is used in the independent station. This website benefits
the lesson because it explains the content of the lesson plan, and helps the students build their
vocabulary. This website supports my objective because it expands the students’ vocabulary.
This app is of high quality because of the standards compliance, content quality, and learning
goal alignment.

(Kahoot): This piece of multimedia is used in the closure section of my blended lesson plan. The
app benefits the lesson because it creates friendly competition between the students, which
causes the students to be very involved in the class. This app is of high quality because of the
motivation, standards compliance, and content quality.
