ive years ago, Timothy Snyder began work on
The Road to Unfreedom, a book examining a
modern political transformation: What happens
when factual truth is upended? When wealth
is concentrated? When battlefronts are online
as well as on the ground? The Yale history professor had
drafted the book — a book about Russia and Ukraine —
by November 2016, but then Donald Trump was elected
president.
Instead of submitting the book he’d planned, Snyder,
perhaps best known up to that point for his critically
acclaimed histories Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler
and Stalin and Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and
Warning, published a slim, best-selling volume called On
Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From the Twentieth Century. He
continued work on The Road to Unfreedom, expanding it to CANDID: “I think what’s been revealed to us is just how important time is in politics,” says Timothy Snyder.

documented history of Vladimir
Putin’s consolidation of power
in Russia, Russia’s invasion of
Ukraine, and Russian meddling in
the 2016 US presidential election.
Snyder centres on the notion that
the world may be lurching from
a “politics of inevitability” — the
notion, as Snyder writes, that a
better future is ahead, “the laws
of progress are known, that there
are no alternatives, and therefore
nothing to be done” — and a
“politics of eternity,” or the idea
that time is “a circle that endlessly
returns to the same threats from
the past … (that posits) that
government cannot aid society as a
whole, but can only guard against
threats.”
Framing the book with six
political virtues, Snyder offers
alternatives in his chapter titles:
Individualism or Totalitarianism;
Truth or Lies. “(I)ndividuality,
endurance, co-operation, novelty,
honesty and justice figure as
political virtues. These qualities are
not mere platitudes or preferences,
but facts of history,” he writes.
“Virtues are inseparable from
the institutions they inspire and
nourish.”
The Tribune spoke with Snyder
by phone; the following is an edited
transcript of the chat, condensed
and edited for clarity.
You are best known as a
historian; why did you write a
book about our contemporary
moment?
When I look around at what
the economists and the political
scientists are saying about the
world — look, I’m just not sure that
they’re covering everything that
needs to be covered. I think history
is really helpful. History can help
you to see when people are lying to
you about the past and history can
give you a sense of what’s possible
and what’s not.
My specific motivation in writing
The Road to Unfreedom is I think
we really are passing through a
crucial moment in the 2010s when
things can go one way or things
can go another way, and that’s
what history’s all about. History
isn’t about how things have to go
a certain way. History is about
what’s possible within the given
structures, so what I’m trying to do
— and it’s ambitious — I’m trying to
write a kind of history of a moment
as it is unfolding, so we see how
it unfolds and so we can see how
much agency, how much freedom,
how much power we have in this
moment.
Your book is framed by
what you term the “politics of
inevitability” and the “politics
of eternity.” How do these
ideas intersect with economic
factors?
It’s really easy to look around and
just experience what’s happening
to us as chaotic or emotional or
somehow inexplicable, and I think
what’s been revealed to us is just
how important time is in politics.
The American version of
(the politics of inevitability) is
something like, the free market’s
going to bring about democracy
and happiness, and those are just
the rules and there’s not really
much that can be done one way or
the other. Eventually you hit some
sort of a crisis where it dawns on
you that progress is not automatic.
It dawns on you that there aren’t
really rules to history. In the US,
you could say this started in 2008
for a lot of folks and then in 2016
it caught up to a lot of different
people, but in the last decade or
so, I think it’s fair to say this notion
that things are just automatically
going to get better has fallen away.
What can come next is what I call
in the book the politics of eternity,
which is this notion that there
really isn’t a future, there’s just kind
of a hazy past where things were
better. And what’s cut us off from
that hazy past is not ourselves or
our policies or our rulers, but other
people — foreign enemies, native
enemies. A slogan like “America
First” reflects this, because it loops
back to the 1930s. The idea of
making America great again: You
don’t give anyone a future, you
deny the future exists.
I’d say economic inequality
has everything to do with this.
If you thought in our politics of
inevitability that there were no
alternatives to capitalism or that
you can’t even modify capitalism,
you can’t even dream about having
a welfare state, that itself generates
economic inequality both of income
and of wealth. And when you get
too much economic inequality, then
people stop believing in progress.
They stop believing in the future.
You note that certain uniquely
American institutions may be
viewed as vulnerabilities by
foreign agents — particularly
the electoral college and the
Second Amendment. Can you
explain?
We have these institutional
restrictions — the electoral
college is built into the system,
gerrymandering is permitted by the
system — and those things move

us away from being a democratic
system. But from the point of view
of a foreign adversary, they look
like vulnerabilities because they
make it easier to throw the election.
It’s odd from any point of view,
except ours, that the president can
win, even though he gets 3 million
fewer votes than his opponent. But
from the point of someone who’s
trying to harm us, it makes it easier
or more plausible to throw your
weight. At the end (of the 2016
election, Russian agents) time this
flood of fake news in places like
Michigan and Wisconsin, which
everyone thinks (Hillary) Clinton
is going to win, and which she
doesn’t, but they can target that
wave because it’s not a national
election. It’s an election that’s
going to be determined by a few
states at the last moment, and once
others understand our system that
way, they can try to manipulate our
system that way — which is what
actually happened.
Sovereignty means that the
state has a monopoly on legitimate
violence, and that violence is an
exception and not a rule. When you
look at the US from the outside,
it’s odd that tens of thousands of
people die in gun violence every
year. It’s odd that in critical tender
public places, like schools, we
would have these regular shootings.
If you’re hostile to the United
States, that looks like a place you
could just push, you could just
expand, you could try to make it
worse, and that of course means
supporting the NRA, which of
course Russia does.
There have been reports
that some Russians believe the
influence of meddling in the US
election has been overblown.
What do you think about that?

I guess if you’re in Russia it’s hard
to imagine what an open society
is like. In particular, it’s hard to
imagine what an unregulated
Internet would look like. Our
Internet is so unregulated that
it’s just sort of extraordinary. Mr
Putin’s original line about the
Internet was that it was a CIA plot.
It took him a long time to figure
out that it wasn’t a CIA plot, that
it was actually just what it looked
like. And because it was just what it
looked like, they could use it to get
into American politics and change
our reality.
You end the book with a call
for a “politics of responsibility.”
What do you mean by that?
I’m trying to think seriously
about politics on the scale of one
life or one generation. My premise
in this book is there really is good
and evil. Some things really are
better and some things really are
worse, and that being a good citizen
isn’t just a matter of doing what
everybody else does. It’s a matter
of having some idea of virtue and
trying to live up to that idea of
virtue in public. The book is not
just about things falling apart; it’s
about the virtues you lose when
things fall apart. — The Chicago

Ideal Indian School (IIS) recently felicitated meritorious students, who made it to the principal’s honours
list securing higher grades in the school’s final examinations during the academic year 2017-18.
A special assembly was organised in the school to honour nearly 900 students from KG, Junior, Boys’
and Girls’ Sections. Syed Shoukath Ali, IIS Principal, gave away gold medals and certificates to the
students. Speaking on the occasion, the principal congratulated the students and applauded their hard
work and perseverance and wished them success in their future.
Trophies were also awarded to various houses, which excelled in the curricular and co-curricular
activities. In the Junior Section, the ‘Champion House of the Year Award’ went to Green House headed
by Nisha Raj. In Boys’ Section, Red House, headed by Ajmal, won the overall championship. In the Girls’
Section, the Blue House, lead by Ronnie Elizabeth, was declared the champion house.

Ministry of Interior officers hold awareness session at PSSC

A team, under the umbrella of Ministry of
Interior, recently visited Pak Shamaa School
and College (PSSC) and conducted two
sessions for the teachers and students.
The members of the visiting team were
namely, Captain Shaheen al-Attique,
Lieutenant Hamad Ali al-Murvi and Faisal
Hudewi. The speakers committed to provide
safe, supportive and disciplined learning
environment for the students of all expatriate
schools.
Juvenile Police Department is committed to
help and resolve the problems amicably. The
school authorities should first try their level
best to resolve different disputes. The students
and teachers should realise their duties and
responsibilities. The schools should conduct
awareness sessions, from time to time, and
extend their support to the relevant authorities.

Punjab Musical Group (PMG), a cultural group of Pakistani expatriates, in collaboration with Sohni
Dharti, an other Pakistani expatriates’ group, will hold ‘Comedy & Musical Night’ at Ball Room in Al
Khor community on April 28 from 6pm to 11:30pm. The programme included performances by
Shakeel Ahmed Siddiquie, known as king of comedy in Pakistan, Rauf Lal, also a famous comedian,
and Shahida Murtaza, a TV actress.

Doha Club wins laurels at Division E

toastmasters’ annual conference
Doha Toastmasters Club (DTC),
the first toastmasters club of
Qatar, recently participated in the
‘Toastmasters Annual Conference’
of Division E. More than 100
toastmasters from across Qatar
attended the conference.
Doha Club excelled at the prestigious
‘Falcon Leadership Awards’,
sweeping most of the awards. The
club was awarded the ‘Outstanding
Club of The Year’ and Nisamudheen
S A, DTC President, shared the
‘Outstanding Leader of the Year’
award with Sunil Kumar Menon, Area
Director.
Niloufer Sama, Vice President
Education-l of DTC, was awarded
the ‘Outstanding Toastmaster of
the Year’. Sudhanva Vijay, Vice
President of Public Relation of the
club, also won accolades for the ‘Best
Club Website’ and ‘Best Club News
Letter’. Kamala Thakur was specially
recognised for her services to the
club and the conference. Victoria
Ferrer, former Region Advisor and a
known toastmaster, presented the
awards.
The club also bagged the
championships in Humorous
and Evaluation speech contests.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) recently welcomed newly enrolled students to the
Marhaba Tartans evening, an event where the students can explore the academic programmes,
student experience, and opportunities at CMU-Q.
More than 100 admitted students and their families met their future professors and classmates, as
well as the staff members, who will support them in their educational journey.
Michael Trick, Dean of CMU-Q, welcomed the Class of 2022 and said, “Students, university is a

When Einstein died on 18th
April, 1955, pathologist Thomas
Harvey found himself alone in the
morgue with the scientist’s body.
Harvey stole his brain to study that
special something between his ears.
Brains have long held a
fascination, particularly for people
wanting to study the secrets of the
intelligent, talented and powerful.
The Moscow Brain Institute
collected and studied the brains
of many prominent scientists and
thinkers, including Lenin.
Where there’s life, there’s death.
But for some, it seems that life and
legacy continue long after death
in one way or the other. Einstein,
Kennedy, Beethoven, Napolean and
Galileo are among many others who
rest in pieces.
Who stole JFK’s brain? When
Kennedy died, his brain was
removed and stored in the
National Archives. However, three
years later, it was discovered that
it had gone missing. Conspiracy
theorists suggest that the missing
organ was intentionally kept out
of the public eye as it was a proof
that the president was shot from
the front, and not from the back
as the official story claims. Some
suggest that the brain was in
fact, taken by his brother Robert,
“to conceal evidence of the true
extent of President Kennedy’s
illnesses”.
After Galileo’s death in 1642,
most of his body parts eventually
went missing including his bones
which were taken by his followers
as mementos.
Abraham Lincoln’s assassination
sent a nation into mourning, and
was followed by a two-week funeral
tour. Everyone from thieves to
politicians tried to take control of
the corpse — even decades after it
was finally buried.
Napoleon’s body parts are also
thought to be scattered — intestines
allegedly belonging to him were
held in London and destroyed
during a bombing raid during the
blitz, but his reproductive organ
is believed to be owned by the
daughter of John Lattimer, a New

Have to change notion
of masculinity, says Ranbir
Actor Ranbir Kapoor has said the notion of
masculinity has to be changed to empower women.
Ranbir said this while interacting with the media along
with Deepika Padukone, Shabana Azmi, and Manish
Malhotra.

Manish Malhotra, in an event organised by Shabana
Azmi’s Mijwan Welfare Society.
On asking his idea of empowering the women of the
country and securing equal rights for them, Ranbir
said: “I think firstly, we have to change the notion of
masculinity.”
“I think the idea which we have in our mind about
masculinity... if we could change the feeling of
entitlement then that’s the big thing,” he said.
“Once we do that, we should provide a platform to
encourage citizen of our country, especially to girls
and the women. It will then be a great start and I think
Mijwan Welfare Society is just about that,” Ranbir added.
Speaking on his experience of walking the ramp with his
co-actor and ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone after so
long, Ranbir said: “I think the biggest thing is we have
come together to walk for Mijwan Welfare Society. That
is the bigger picture here so it’s always wonderful to walk
for Manish with Deepika and for Shabana aunty and
everybody concerned with Mijwan Welfare Society.”
When Deepika was asked regarding her experience
of walking the ramp with Ranbir, she said: “It’s very
exciting. This is for the first time I am walking the ramp
for the Mijwan fashion show. I started off my career as
a model. I walked the ramp many times but this was
special. It felt genuine, real and connected.”
“I feel everyone behind the scenes has worked really
hard in doing what they do. Not just putting the
show together but you can see the work, effort, and
craftsmanship,” said Deepika.
The Padmaavat actress also said it gives her real joy to
see the Mijwan group doing so much to empower women
and children.
“I think most importantly, the fact that they have
empowered so many women and children give me so
much joy and it’s inspiring to see the work they do,”
added Deepika.
Ranbir will be seen next in the biopic of actor Sanjay
Dutt titled Sanju, directed by Raj Kumar Hirani, and in

after anxiety attack

their support for Patti Murin,
a star of the Broadway musical
Frozen, who has opened up
about the anxiety attack
that caused her to miss Tuesday’s
performance.
“So last night I called out of the show
because I had a massive anxiety attack
in the afternoon. It had been building up
for a while, and while the past month has
been incredible, all of the ups and downs
and stress and excitement really takes a
toll on my mental health,” Murin, 37, who
plays Anna in the stage adaptation of the
hit Disney animated feature, wrote on
social media.
“I’ve learned that these situations
aren’t something to ‘deal with’ or ‘push
through,’” she continued. “Anxiety and
depression are real diseases that affect so
many of us. It requires a lot of rest and
self-care to heal every time it becomes
more than I can handle in my daily life.
While I hate missing the show for any
reason at all, Disney has been nothing but
supportive of me as I navigate my life and
work, and I’m so grateful to them.”
She added, “Just remember that you’re
not alone, your feelings are real, and this

A
pair of women who worked
with R. Kelly for years resigned
from their positions amid a
wave of harrowing allegations
against the singer.
His assistant Diana Copeland and his
entertainment attorney Linda Mensch both
recently told the BBC they’re no longer
working with the R&B singer.
Copeland had worked as an assistant to
Kelly for over a decade, while Mensch had
been his lawyers for four years.
Neither woman went into much
detail regarding their resignations, with
Copeland telling the British outlet she
wasn’t employed by Kelly since April
1, and Mensch saying she is “no longer
represented Mr (sic) Kelly or his entities.”
Their resignations come less than a
month after BBC Three detailed explosive
accusations about Kelly’s treatment of
women in a documentary, in which his
former girlfriend Kitti Jones claimed Kelly
had groomed a woman to be his pet since
she was 14.
“I saw that she was dressed like me, that
she was saying the things I’d say and her
mannerisms were like mine,” Jones told
reporter Ben Zand. “That’s when it clicked
in my head that he had been grooming
me to become one of his pets. He calls

as opposed to one huge, irrationally
sad mood.” She added that she was first
diagnosed with the condition during her
junior year of college in 2001.
A spokesman for Disney Theatrical
confirmed Murin performed Wednesday
night and was scheduled to continue

Dallas through her attorney that accuses
Kelly of giving her a sexually transmitted
disease after they started dating last June.
The woman claims she was 19 when they
began their relationship.
A rep for Kelly “categorically” denied

WCM-Q prepares high school
students for medical education
H
igh school students
with dreams of careers
in medicine recently
received a boost
thanks to the Qatar
Aspiring Doctors Program (QADP)
of Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar
(WCM-Q).
The year-long QADP is designed
to help talented high school
students, who are interested in
becoming doctors, strengthen their
college applications by improving
on their areas of strength in the
physical sciences, biology, English
for academic purposes, and
research skills.
This year, 28 students in
Grades 9-12 from 20 high schools
across Qatar participated in the
programme. These students were
invited, along with their families
to a closing event at WCM-Q
where they received certificates
marking their participation in, or
completion of, the programme.
Dr Rachid Bendriss, Assistant
Dean for Student Recruitment,
Outreach and Foundation
Programs, said, “QADP is an
excellent way for high school
students with ambitions to become
doctors to begin to acquire a solid
foundation of skills that will
help them to do so. It challenges
students to be self-disciplined and
pro-active, and I’m pleased to say
that this year’s cohort rose to that
challenge extremely well. We look
forward to receiving applications
to join WCM-Q from a great many
of them.”
The programme, now in its
fourth year, also helps students
prepare for the ACT college
admissions test, as well as helping
them acquire important time-
management and critical-thinking
skills.
The QADP course comprises
a combination of face-to-face
instruction, online modules
and hands-on training based on
a customised time-table that
takes account of students’ high
school studies. QADP is self-
paced, flexible and involves a full
academic year of contact from
September to April. Students also
have the opportunity to engage
directly with WCM-Q faculty,
staff and students, and to use
WCM-Q facilities, giving them
an accurate idea of what life as
a medical student at WCM-Q
would be like.
Of the 28 students, who
participated, five students were
awarded certificates for completion
with honours in the Physical
Sciences, Research Skills or
Biology. Latifa Mahmoud, a student
of Al Bayan Secondary School for
Girls, was awarded a certificate
of completion with honours in all
modules of the programme.
Speaking at the closing event,
Latifa said, “The great thing about
being a QADP student is that you
don’t just get to enhance your skills
academically, you also get amazing
advice and tips about the college
application process and access to
WCM-Q resources, like you were
a true Cornell student. I feel I am a
much stronger student now.”
Admission to the QADP is based
solely on merit. Students, who
wish to participate must have
excellent academic high school
performance, have demonstrated
a strong desire to become a doctor
and be nominated by their high
schools.

team plays in Greece
The Texas A&M University at Qatar football team recently accepted an
invitation from the American College of Greece (ACG) to participate
in their annual International Sports Festival. Students namely, Esteban
Saba, Yousef Diab, Souheib Seddi, Hussam Sayed, Moustafa Selim,
Mohammed al-Tamimi, Ahmad al-Hamedi, Mohammad Shehabi, Amro
Mohamed, Ayan Zia, Omar Hasnah, Almotazbelah Eledrisi, Abdulkarim
Mohamed, Mohammed Abou Arkoub, Ahmed al-Nowfal and Mohamed
ElBiba played three matches against ACG, Lebanese American
University and the University of Balamand. The players also visited
cultural sites in Athens including the Acropolis, its surrounding areas,
the Acropolis Museum and historic Plaka. The trip was partially funded
