An online survey was given to the teachers at Harris County High School using Survey Monkey. This is

The results of the survey indicated a great need and desire for change and improvement in this library.
Based on the survey, these are the problem areas: low library usage, minimal librarian/teacher
collaboration, lack of resources, and minimal access to 21st century technology (skills & tools) in the
media center.
Long-range goals were developed using the revised AASL mission statement.
Long-Range Goals:
Long-Range Goal I: Increase class and individual usage/patronage of the media center.
Rationale: collaboration with educators and students to design and teach engaging learning experiences
that meet individual needs. (Empowering Learners)
Goal II: The librarian will collaborate with teachers, thus offering more class sessions as well as co-
teaching opportunities in information literacy as well cross-curricular.
Rationale: Instruct students and assist educators in using, evaluating, and producing information and
ideas through active use of a broad range of appropriate tools, resources, and information technologies.

Goal III: Increase print and non-print resources for students and teachers.
Rationale: Provide access to materials in all formats, including up-to-date, high-quality, varied literature
to develop and strengthen a love of reading. (Empowering Learners)
Goal IV: Increase 21st-Century skills and access to 21st-Century tools and resources that support the
Common Core Curriculum and the system’s strategic plan.
Rationale: Provide students and staff with instruction and resources that reflect current information
needs and anticipate changes in technology and education.
All of these goals are consistent with the system’s strategic plan and mission statement.
Objective 1a: The librarian will develop lessons to encourage whole class usage of the library. Some
examples of lessons are: research skills, Galileo, avoiding plagiarism, information scavenger hunts, etc.
Evaluation 1a: The librarian will submit to his/her supervisor a record of classes taught each grading
period and must show an increase in whole class visits to the library.
Timeline: Implementation will occur in the fall of 2014 and will continue.
Objective 1b: The library will create, publish, and distribute hard copy and digital promotional materials
regarding new materials, classes being offered, and display items; these materials will generate interest
in the library, resulting in more patrons. Promotions will be run at least once a month.
Evaluation 1b: Promotional materials will be submitted to the librarian’s supervisor each month. The
librarian will show an increase in patrons and materials checked out.
Long-Range Goal II: The librarian will collaborate with teachers, thus offering more class sessions as well
as co-teaching opportunities in information literacy as well cross-curricular subjects.
Objective 2a: The librarian will participate in collaborative planning with each discipline area, allowing
them to share ideas and work on developing classes, discuss resources, and share ideas.
Timeline: Implementation will begin in October of 2014 and will continue to increase.
Evaluation 2a: The librarian will submit documentation of meetings to his/her supervisor.
Objective 2b: The librarian will survey teachers about their needs and wants for library resources and
classes they would like to see offered.
Evaluation 2b: Copies of completed surveys will be given to the librarian’s supervisor as well as a plan on
how/when needs, wants, and classes will be offered.
Timeline: Surveys will be administered in February of 2014 and again in August of 2014.
Objective 2c: The librarian will participate in professional development or a conference at least once a
year to learn strategies for collaboration with teachers and learn ideas for lesson plans for classes to be
taught in the media center.
Timeline: To begin the 2014-2015 school year and continue annually through 2019 if funding allows.
Objective 2d: The librarian will update the media center web page to include a calendar of classes,
lesson plan ideas for teachers, and tools for teachers to use.
Evaluation 2d: An updated web-page will be monitored and evaluated by his/her supervisor.
Timeline: Updates will begin in August 2014 and will continue monthly.
Goal III: Increase print and non-print resources for students and teachers.
Objective 3a: Form a LAC: Library advisory committee and conduct meetings.
Evaluation 3a: The librarian will submit meeting documentation to his/her supervisory and post minutes
from the meeting on the library web page.
Timeline: A LAC will be in place by April 2014 and meetings will begin in October of 2014 and will
continue.
Objective 3b: Request approval for fundraisers to help generate funds for the media center.
Timeline: Requests will be submitted twice yearly (Board Policy) beginning in fall 2014. Fundraisers will
being in January 2015 and will occur twice annually.
Evaluation 3c: Submit documentation for grant requests to supervisor and post on the library web page.
Timeline: The grant process will begin in January 2015 and be completed by fall of 2015 but will continue
on an as needed basis to be reviewed/determined by the LAC.
Goal IV: Increase 21st-Century skills and access to 21st-Century tools and resources that support the
Common Core Curriculum and the system’s strategic plan.
Objective 4a: The library will classes to students and provide staff development to teachers on how to
use 21st Century technology.
Evaluation 4a: Teachers and librarian will submit documentation to the supervisor and post classes on
the library website.
Timeline: The implementation and use of free and existing resources will begin in August of 2014 (Web
2.0 tools, etc.). An increase in new devices will begin in 2015, showing increases each year through 2019
when a new plan is implemented.
Objective 4b: The librarian will participate in 21st Century professional development.
Evaluation 4b: Documentation to be submitted to his/her supervisor and posted on the web page.
Objective 4c: The library will obtain more 21st Century tools by using free online tools as well as by
requesting donations from Harris County High School’s Partners in Education, local businesses, and
participating in matching funds programs.
Timeline: Professional development will begin in 2014 and continue each year through 2019.
Evaluation 4c: Documentation will be submitted the librarian’s supervisor as well as a list of free online
tools being utilized. Information will also be published on the library web page.
Timeline: The implementation and use of free and existing resources will begin in August of 2014 (Web
2.0 tools, etc.). An increase in new devices will begin in 2015, showing increases each year. Devices will
be doubled by 2017 and continue to increase through 2019.
Donation and grant requests will begin in 2014 and continue through 2019.
Timeline and Evaluation: Because of the urgency of each of these goals, objectives will be put into place
immediately in 2014, but full gains or maintenance will continue through 2019 (see above). The
librarian’s supervising administrator will oversee documentation of each objective as well as publication
of documentation via the media center web page. A LAC will need to be formed in the spring of 2014
and begin meeting by the fall of 2014. The LAC will help guide the librarian in his/her mission, goals,
objectives, and also serve as an evaluating body for the media center/librarian. At the end of each
school year, teachers, parents, and community members will participate in a library y satisfaction
survey. Surveys will also be used as an evaluation tool.
Advocacy: The librarian will present the SMP in the spring of 2014 at a school faculty meeting. The plan
will also be linked to the library’s web page. The librarian will schedule a community open-house in the
late spring 2014 in the school’s media center to share the plan, give a tour, and ask for feedback. The
librarian will also meet with public librarians once per school year to share progress and collaborate; this
will begin in the fall of 2014.
The library will publish a quarterly newsletter to be given to faculty, students, parents, and community
members; the newsletter will showcase SMP achievements as well as helpful tips, information literacy
facts, and showcase student achievement; this will begin in January of 2015.
The librarian will be on the faculty meeting agenda quarterly, beginning in the spring of 2014 in order to
communicate the SMP and share progress and answer questions.
