Every Tuesday afternoon, Alina would go with her friends for piano lessons. The music
school they attended was at a shopping centre. One Tuesday, the girls were eating lunch at the
canteen. Janet said she did not feel like going for the piano lesson. Siti and Jamila said they too
felt the same. Alina did not say anything.
Then Janet suggested they skip the day‟s lesson. She wanted to hang out at the
shopping centre until the lesson was over. Siti and Janet thought it was a great idea. Alina did
not agree with them. She said their parents had paid a lot of money for the piano lessons. She
also thought hanging out at shopping centres was not beneficial. Her friends did not listen to her.
While Alina went to the piano lesson, her friends walked around the shopping centre.
The girls went into a cosmetics shop. They liked the lipsticks but they did not have enough
money to buy them. Each of them quietly took a lipstick and put it in their bag. They did not
realise that a sales assistant was watching them. She caught them. They begged her not to call
the police or their parents. They promised not to steal again. The sales assistant let them go
with a warning. The girls never stole again and they have never missed their piano lessons ever

Read the process carefully.
How Pottery is Made

1. First, the potter chooses and prepares the clay by pressing and squeezing the
clay with his hands to make it soft and smooth. It also gets rid of air bubbles
that could crack the clay during the firing process.

2. Then, he shapes the clay. He can do this by one of the methods such as the
coil method, slab method, mould method and wheel method.

3. After the clay dries up, it is decorated and glazed. Simple decorations can be
made by pressing fingers into the soft clay. Glazing smoothens and
waterproofs pottery.

4. Next, the pottery is baked in an oven called kiln to make it hard and strong.

5. Finally, the pots are allowed to cool and packed before distributing to shops

Exercise 11
Read the passage.
Save the Earth

We need to do our part in saving Earth. One of the ways is by reusing things.
What do you do with disposable items such as plastic cups, plates, utensils and
plastic food storage bags? You can wash and reuse them. Most of these things
will last for a long time with many uses.
Has the air-conditioner or washing machine at your home broken down?
Instead of replacing them, you should first try to get them repaired. Do you want
to replace furniture of electrical appliances that can still be used? Do not throw
them away. You should donate them to charitable organisations such as old
folks‟ homes and children‟s homes.
You can also sell things you no longer need. You get money and produce
less waste. If you need to buy something, why not look for those things in
secondhand shops first? The things there may still be useful and are much
cheaper than the new ones.
Plastic bags harm the environment. They also take a long time to degrade.
When you go shopping, bring cloth bags. They can be reused for a long time.
Do not tear off the gitf wrappers. Try to remove it carefully. Reuse it when you
need to wrap presents. When you do this, you can save the environment and
your money. Finally, use washable cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.
Cloth napkins are usually much larger and more absorbent than paper napkins.

AUXILIARY VERBS
A verb is sometimes made up of more than one word (compound verb), for example,

Auxiliary verbs are used with other verbs to express some grammatical functions (to
make questions or to form tenses)

Study the following sentences:

verb. Auxiliaries must occur before a main verb.

There are four types of auxiliary verbs:

1. To be (is, are, am, was, were)

2. To have (has, have, had)
3. Modals (will, shall, can, could, must, may, etc.)
