INVESTMENTS IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) AND BANK BUSINESS

PERFORMANCE IN GHANA

Investment in information technology and firm performance has received significant attention

in literature. Although many studies have been conducted to investigate this association, the

results were not conclusive in supporting a systematic effect. A review of literature reveals

that studies examining the association between information technology and organizational

performance are divergent in how Information Technology impact on performance. This

study investigates investments in Information Technology (IT) and Bank business

performance by considering a sample of one bank which is Ghana Commercial Bank,

Ahinsan Branch. The principal finding of research is that there is indeed a relationship

between Information technology investment and performance. However the extent are

dependent upon internal and external factors including how the bank aligns its business to IS,

the organizational culture and how best it integrates IT into its operations. It is recommended

that the wholesale adoption of Information Technology is not the best and thus bank

management should take a critical view of their operations and see how best they can

implement Information Technology to improve their businesses performance.
