Learning Objective 5.16 The student will

a) describe mean, median, and mode as measures of center;
c) find the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data;
Activity Describe what the learning The objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of mean,
activity will be. What will the students and
the teacher be doing? (This includes what
median, mode, and range and how to compute each for a given data
they are doing with the technology). set. The teacher will use this SMART Notebook lesson to show the
students the definition and equations for finding the mean, median,
mode, and range for the given data sets within the SMART Notebook
lesson. The teacher will lead the class through the first four slides for
the introduction and MEAN. If there are questions at the end of the
fourth slide, the teacher will give addition direct teaching examples
before moving on to the guided practice. For guided practice, three
students will volunteer to come to the board and work the first set of
examples using the SMART board pen. Once the examples have been
completed the teacher will drag the box in the upper right corner to
the red, white, and blue target in the at the bottom right to reveal the
correct answers. The teacher will then go over each problem to make
sure that all of the students understand how the answers were
achieved. The teacher will then guide the class through the MEDIAN
slides (slides 6, 7, and 8). For slide 8, four students will volunteer to
come up and lead the class through finding the correct answer using
the SMART board pen or their finger. The answer bank is in orange
oblong circle on the right side of the slide. They are populated into
the correct position by clicking and dragging them to the left of the
appropriate data set. Once all four problems are complete, the
teacher will click “Check” at the top and reveal green check marks for
each correct answer. The teacher will then guide the class through
slides 9, 10, and 11 for MODE. During slide 11, three students will
volunteer to lead the class to finding the correct answers using the
SMART board pen or their finger. The correct answer, as well as three
incorrect answers, is available in the green box to the right of the
given data set. The correct answer should be dragged to the white
“Checker Tool” boxes on the right. If the correct answer is chosen, the
Checker Tool box will change to show that the answer is correct. If the
answer is not correct, the Checker Tool box will remain the same. The
teacher will then click the main menu button at the bottom left,

followed by the box containing the word RANGE. The teacher will
guide the students throu50gh the slides 12, 13, and 14. For slide 14,
three students will volunteer to come to the board and show the class
how to find the correct answer using the SMART board pen or their
finger. The answer, as well as three incorrect answers, is available as
multiple-choice answers below the question. If the student chooses
the correct answer, a green check will be revealed, but if the answer
is incorrect, a red X will be revealed and the student can choose a
different answer. Once the first question is answered the student will
click the NEXT box above the question to reveal the next question for
the next student. After all three questions are answered, the third
student will click the FINISH box above the question and the class will
receive a grade for the RANGE questions (3/3=100%). Last, the
students will find the mean, median, mode, and range for the data
sets for independent practice in the class.

The following word problem will be given as a homework problem:
A student has received the following grade on his tests: 87, 95, 76,
and 88. What is his average test score (mean), his median test score,
his mode test score, and the range of his test scores?
