Rock Mass Rating (RMR)
Case:
a 4.2(w) x 4.8 (h) m tunnel, the ground conditions have been characterized as follows:
both with very unfavourable orientation of the main joint set. In addition, some random joints occur.
Average degree of jointing is: Jv = 22; block volume, Vb = 0.1 m³; joint spacing, S = 0.15– 0.6m.
The fresh, continuous joints of the main set are slightly rough & planar, moderately open and range 1 -
3m.
It is “damp” water condition, and approximately 88m rock overburden, i.e. medium stress level. Based on
this, the RMR

Solution:
To classify the rock mass, we must use RMR (Rock Mass Rating). In this case, I ‘ll use RMR from
bieniawski 1989.
Table 1. Parameters of rock mass rating (Bieniawski, 1989)
2
1. Strength of intact rock material
The case above mention that the mass of rock has UCS value about 2-68 MPa. Hence, the rating of
the rock mass is 1.because, in optimist adjustment we’ll determine the value is the minimum value of the
result from analysis (2 Mpa).
2. RQD (Rock Quality Designation)
There is no core to determine the RQD Value, so we could use the palmstrom’s formula to determine
the RQD value.
RQD=115-3,3Jv
Thus, the RQD value is 115-3,3(22) = 42,5%. The rating for this value is 8
3. Spacing of Discountinuities
Space between the joint is 0,15-0,6m. So, the rating is 8
4. Condition of Discontinuities
For this parameter we could see the table below:
Table 2. Condition of discontinuities
The case mention that the length of discontinuity is 1-3 m (Rating = 4), with separation is moderately
open or 0,1-1 mm (Rating = 4), Slightly Rough (Rating = 3) and fresh or unweathered (Rating = 5). For the
infilling parameter, the case mention that discontinuity is fresh. Hence, we can assume that there is no
infilling in the discontinuity (rating=6). Thus, the total rating for this parameter is 22
5. Ground Water
The case mention that the condition of the tunnel is a “damp” condition. The rating is 10.
6. Discontinuity Orientation
The case said that the joint sets are very unfavourable (see the table below)

200 KPa and friction angle about 15-25o. we could see the recommended excavation method and
supporting system for this case at the table below:
