new poll conducted by TD Canada Trust, 70 per cent of people in B.C.
have a list of places they want to visit but have serious doubts that they’ll

has remarkable gut instincts.
“It gives the government an-

and hive off some of the peo-
ple who are a part of the anti-
HST coalition.”
Pilon described Campbell’s
shrewd move as “brilliant”.
“It made him look good. It
made him look fair,” he said.
“And, it undermined some of
the critique from the anti-
HST forces and will expose
some of the cracks in that
coalition because some, like
(former Premier Bill) Vander
Zalm, want to push ahead.
“Some will say we got our
referendum. We got what we
wanted.”
Pilon added that a single
stumble by the Fight HST
camp during a recall cam-
paign would reframe public
dialogue.
“If the premier is successful,
the whole thing will grind to
a halt and people will move
on,” he said. “That’s been the
Liberal strategy all along.”

the scene of her beloved son’s
death Wednesday in a desper-
ate plea to have the driver of a
hit-and-run come forward.
Shamus MacKay, 19, was
struck and killed by a Volk-
swagen City Jetta in the inter-
section of 168 Street and
Fraser Highway in Surrey
Sept. 4.
The driver fled the scene, had
a lawyer contact RCMP to ar-
range a surrender but then
never followed through.
RCMP have been searching
for the driver, who has not
been identified, since.
“It just doesn’t make sense to
me,” said grieving mother
Anne MacKay, clutching a
framed photo of her smiling
boy while facing media in the
same spot he died. “It’s incom-
prehensible. I don’t know what
to say other than I’m hoping
that somebody, whoever, just
please… we all make mistakes.
If they could just come for-

looking for 2008 to 2010 mod-
els of the City Jetta and are
prepared to track down every
driver who owns one in B.C. to
find the suspect.

of people surviving cancer is
on the rise in Canada, statis-
tics show.
Looking at the five-year rel-
ative survival ratio, the num-
ber of cases of people surviv-
ing cancer has increased
since 1992, Statistics Canada
reported Wednesday.
The expected five-year sur-
vival rate for all cancers is
62% for cases diagnosed in
2004 to 2006, while the 10-
year ratio is 58%.
In other words, compared
to people without cancer,
those diagnosed with cancer
are predicted to have about
three-fifths the probability of
surviving the next five years.
Looking at statistics from
1992 to 1994 and 2004 to
2006, the survival rates for
non-Hodgkin lymphoma
rose to 63% from 51%, the
ratio for leukemia went up to
54% from 44%, and liver can-
cer rates nearly doubled to
17% from 9%.

or improvements in treat-
ment,” StatsCan said in the
report.
For cancers with moderate
earlyscreeningsdidn’tpre-
vent prostate cancer death
and led to over-diagnosis.
But a separate study pub-
lished in the same journal
Wednesday says giving
men blood tests when they
turn 60 would identify
those at greatest risk of de-
veloping prostate cancer.
“At least half of men at age
60 can be exempted from
further screening and
chemoprevention,” the
study says.

U.S. showcases massive flood relief to Pakistan

REUTERS — The United
States tried to showcase on
Wednesday its relief efforts
for flood victims in Pakistan,
an ally considered vital in
the war against militancy.
“Our country has donated
the most money and the
most helicopters,” Richard
Holbrooke, the special rep-
resentative for Afghanistan
and Pakistan, told reporters
after a visit to Pakistan’s
flood-hit areas.
“Pakistan has to start all
over again and the interna-
tional community — and
again led by the United
States — will be here to help
them. That’s why we are
here.”
The floods are Pakistan’s
worst-ever natural disaster
in terms of damage, with at
least 6 million people forced
from their homes and 20 mil-
lion people affected.
The disaster has killed
more than 1,750 people, and
aid agencies have warned
that millions are at risk of
death if emergency food and
shelter are not quickly pro-
vided.
The United States hopes to
improve its image in Pak-
istan — where anti-Ameri-
can sentiment runs high —
and pumping millions of dol-
lars to help flood victims may
win some hearts and minds.
Washington has donated
$261 million for relief and re-
covery.
Washington also wants to
make sure the floods do not
create political turmoil in
Pakistan, which faces a Tal-
iban insurgency at home and
is under U.S. pressure to
tackle militants who cross
the border to attack U.S.-led
NATO troops in
Afghanistan.
Seventeen thousand people
are still living in a cemetery
six weeks after the flood.
Some 200,000 people have
no access to toilets, an ideal
breeding ground for poten-
tially fatal diseases.
Many flood victims are not
aware of the American assis-
tance because aid is chan-
neled through humanitarian
agencies.

can be an exciting adventure
and can enhance the overall
ambiance of a room. But
knowing exactly what to buy
and where to put each piece
can often be a difficult and

Adene Lucas, a Calgary-
based interior designer with
Accent on Design, knows all
too well the trials and tribu-
lations many homeowners
go through when searching
for artwork for their home.
For Lucas, knowing what
you like is just as important
as the space you are trying to
fill. Picking things that have
a special meaning to you or
appeal to your decorating
sense are always going to be
a good investment.
“Selecting artwork is really
a personal choice,” says
Lucas.
“The art should speak to
you or represent something

One of the good things about September is fall fash-
ion.
If you have kids, you’ve probably been out shopping
all week and have seen all the jewel-coloured cloth-
ing in the stores. Or maybe you’ve picked up the
September issue of Vogue and found pages of to-die-
for outfits in rich jewel colours filling the issue. If
you regularly listen to Sam and I on the radio, then
you’ve known for a long while now that we love the
jewel tones and that they were coming home this
fall.
We’ve talked about peacocks a lot, and you may
know that I have a thing for these birds. The colours
in a green/blue peacock are going to be at home this
winter, and they are going to look amazing with your
neutrals.
If your transitional or traditional home is coloured
with a plethora of taupes, greys, bronzes, chocolate-
browns, beiges and blacks, then you don’t even have
to think about adding peacock-blue, teal, royal blue,
plum or an elegant red — you can just do it. This
modern palette uses the jewel tones for accents and
keeps plenty of neutrals in the mix.
If you live in a modern space and have used a lot of
blue accents. The secret to adding jewel tones is not
to pick and choose one or two of these stately hues
but to add all of them — the designer look is to keep
the mix. Buy yourself a bundle of majestic peacock
feathers and set them in a vase if you need confirma-
tion and inspiration for the palette.
I’m confident that you’ll have no trouble finding
product. We found a fabulous peacock-blue and
brown wool throw at Pier One last week and some
amazing jewel-toned pillows, while HomeSense has
stocked their shelves with great pillows, towels and a
lot of jewel-coloured ceramics.
Throws, toss cushions, towels for the bathroom and
a collection of ceramic vases (arrange a group on the
mantle, dining table or kitchen counter) are quick
and inexpensive decorative accessories that you add
to a room for a virtually instantaneous update.
For those of us more committed to the jewels, bring
home one of the fabulous flocked jewel-hued wall pa-
pers, reupholster an armchair in a royal purple mock-
crocodile velvet fabric or paint a wall or two in your DESIGNER IDEAS

A DEEPER VERSION
OF EA’S CLASSIC
Whether you love it or hate it, you
know the drill by now: EA Sports
releases a new version of its criti-
cally acclaimed NHL series.
Those assessing it purely on the
merits of traditional sports game
criteria proceed to rave about the
realism it brings to the table.
Meanwhile, diehards show up at
various video game stores to
scoop the title at midnight on its
launch date, then phone in sick to
work the next day while they take
their favourite NHL team on a
Stanley Cup run. At the same time
every year, a handful of former
diehards bow out, tired of paying
$70 for last year’s game with a few
gameplay tweaks and a roster up-

vision rival which selected you
in the third round of the 2009
NHL entry draft.
That’s the scenario Kevin
Connauton was dealt with a
year ago when the Canucks
called his name in Montreal.
As an Edmonton native and
a big Oilers fan, the defence-
man had to switch allegiances.
He says it was never an issue.
“You go from just cheering
for a team to trying to make a
team, so it’s pretty easy to con-
vert over,” said the Vancouver
prospect, who is manning the
Canucks blueline at the rook-
ies camp in Penticton. “I just
put all that behind me. I’m 100
per cent Canuck now and I
couldn’t be happier.”
While it could be a few years
before he dons the blue and
green jersey full time, Con-
nauton has already familiar-
ized himself with Vancouver.
The 6-foot-2, 200-lbs blue-
liner set a franchise record last
year with the WHL Giants for
most goals (24) and points
(72) in a single season by a D-
man.
To top it off, he signed a
three-year entry-level con-
tract with the Canucks in
April.
Connauton says he has
grown at the Young Stars tour-
nament this week.
“It’s all about being comfort-
able and being confident and
that’s something I definitely
have more of coming into
camp this year,” he said. “Ob-
viously Edmonton is always
home for me, I go back there in
