PROJECT BRIEF

Make and assembly the Steam Boat Project which contains a trench, sawing to a depth, and
sawing at an angle. Then assembly the Boat using Panel Pins and the Hot Glue Gun. Final
design and Personalise the Boat with your own Style, using recycled material from the wood
waste bin and the Wood Burner.

STEP 1: MARKING OUT THE FACE SIDE AND EDGE

Select the best face side and edges of the piece (usually the straightest or edges free from
dents) and mark the face side and edge using the proper marks. Also put your name on the
piece.

Mark waste on both sides of the piece by measuring in with your steel ruler 5 to 10 mm and
then square it around with your tri square.

Measuring in from the left 180mm and square the line around the piece on both sides.

STEP4:

Measuring in from the right 45mm and square the line around the piece on both sides as
shown in step 3.
STEP 5:

Then mark the area in between as waste and label the larger piece A and the smaller piece B

STEP 6:

Measure in 90mm from the left on piece A and square the line down about half way on both
sides.

STEP 7:
Measure a further 45mm from the new 90mm line and square it down about half way on
both sides. (or 135mm from waste line.)

STEP 8:

Set your marking gauge to half the piece thickness which is 9mm as shown in pictures
below. (Always measure from the top of the spur it get the most accurate distance. Then
turn your piece on its edge and place your marking gauge spur on the 90mm line and point
it and the place your spur on the 45 line and scribe a line between the to points. (Always
scribe with your marking gauge always from your body)

STEP 9:

Measure in 30mm from the left on piece A from the waste liner
STEP 10:

Find the Centrepoint of the width one the waste line. (Half the width)

STEP 11:

Using your ruler join back up the centre point to both corners of the 30mm line as shown in
the image below.
STEP 12:

Saw down to a depth using your tenon saw on the 90mm line. (Remember your stance and

Repeat above method on 45 line.

Chisel out the trench up at an angle working your way down to the line (don’t go through to
the other side of the piece)(place your piece in the vice)
STEP 15:

Repeat the above method from the other side.

STEP 16:

Chisel flat and arc your chisel slowly back and forth from both sides.
