Forestry Technician (Recreation)

Most of my memories growing up in Montana have been adventuring in the outdoors with friends and
family. My life has always revolved around different kinds of recreational activities. This opportunity will give me
a chance to combine my passions and my education to help people connect to what the recreation profession
has to offer. There are a few reasons I know that I am a good fit for this position an d I wanted to share them
with you.
First, as a member of the team I would take great pleasure in sharing my knowledge and experiences
I’ve obtained with others. My patience and calm nature would benefit the program as well as enable me to be
productive with the general public and coworkers within the departments. I believe in turn I will respond to
specific requests from guests with the best of my abilities. My experience with the Forest Service lead me to
take pride in being part of a big organization.
A few other skills and qualifications that would serve me in this position is being able to work with
different land management agencies such as the Forest Service, BLM, open lands within city limits and also
private landowners. Over the last few years, I have gained considerable knowledgeable about their land
management processes. In a recent job working for Western Agriculture Research Center (MSU), I was able to
team up with local farmers to set up specific experiments for better crop production yields. I loved this because
the local farmers were so curious about the results that we would see them and update them on a weekly basis.
You’re going to see lots of candidates for this position but I hope my experience and my passion for this
role will stand out. I would be thrilled and honored to add my skills to your vision to enhance the quality of life
for recreational users. I look forward to a chance to interview and talk more about the position. If you have any
questions feel free to call, text or email anytime. Enclosed is my resume and professional references for your
review.

Thank you!

Forest Service (Parks and Recreation Internship Volunteer)

03/02/2014 – 10/07/2014
 As a Volunteer in the Bitterroot National Forest, Montana my main duties involved working in public
relations. On separate occasions I was in charge of answering questions for special events. This
involved answering questions and/or concerns about what the Forest Service had to offer specific to
the area. Daily tasks included maintenance on trail heads and campgrounds where I also worked with
the Montana Conservation Corps in preliminary trail construction and later development. I de veloped
an understanding of what's involved in trail construction like slope, elevation grade, soil types,
vegetation types, endangered species, and different techniques with switchbacks and terrain. I worked
close with the fire helicopter crew to help with a back country bridge construction where we used the
helicopter to drop off 50 foot beams to replace a bridge that was washed out. I was also able to spend
some time with the fisheries specialist in assisting with research and surveys in the area. Electro-fishing
was my favorite where we walked through the river with a battery pack to stun fish to see how the
population has evolved.

Bachelor’s degree in Parks Recreation and Tourism. Emphasizing in Natural Resources, Recreation Planning and
Management.
 This degrees focus was on professional preparation within Parks and Recreation. Classes involved
recreation program leadership and community engagement learning. These courses offered a way for
me to work within the community. Learning about management structure within different recreation
facilities. These classes helped me learn how to network and gain establishment within the
community. In my Management classes I learned my specific style of management and how to
effectively use my skills to benefit everyone I’m working with. Some more specific classes involved land
resource management and ecology and management of wildlands. These were my favorite class
because they involved working within recreational areas and understanding the impacts that people
have on the areas.
 One of my big projects at the University of Utah was being able to outreach with the Boys and Girls
Club (BaGC) to give kids a chance to learn to ski for the first time. With a small team we organized a
partnership with Solitude Ski Resort and the BaGC to get ten free lessons for kids as well as gear
rentals for the day. To help promote the event, we set up a clothing drive which generated such a

response that we were able to find hundreds of winter clothes to donate to the BaGC. Being able to
spend the day with the kids, teach them about the dangers of being exposed to cold temperatures and
watch them crash down the hill made all the hard work worthwhile. This was a great way to learn
about networking and working with different organizations to achieve our project goals.
