Another example of how Austin is on the map nationally for our groundbreaking work in SEL ‘work supported by the St. David's Foundation! ‘Aliso, thanks Lindsay for letting me know that the new 2015-2016 SEL longitudinal report is now available online - as is the accompanying research brief. Here's the excerpt from Dept of Ed (see page 23 in attached): Social emotional learning (SEL) (ESEA section 4107(a)(3)(J)). An LEA may use funds for activities in social emotional learning, including interventions that build resilience, self-control, empathy, persistence, and other social and behavioral skills, Extensive research, as well as educators’ own experiences, shows that school-based SEL programs play an important role in fostering healthy relationships and increasing academic and career success. A growing body of research in this field is demonstrating that various tools and practices can enhance students’ social and emotional 3 development! For example, implementing practices that support students’ sense of belonging and value can increase students’ academic success.) SPOTLIGHT: Many schools are incorporating SEL into their programs and services. For example, the Austin Independent School District (AISD) has succeeded in developing a model for systematic and systemic SEL for all of its 83,600 students {focused on four core practices: explicit skills instruction, SEL integration, school climate and culture, and family and ‘community engagement. SEL coaches are deployed throughout the system to support implementation of SEL. Using a vertical structure, Austin started with two high schools and thelr feeder schools. As of 2015-16, all 130 schools in the district ore receiving professional develooment in implementing SEL. Evidence-based SEL programs are one important part of AISD’s implementation strategy. Elementary and middle schools are using explicit instructional materials and lessons are generally taught weekly by the classroom teacher and reinforced and integrated into instruction in all areas of the school. in several high schools, ninth-graders attend @ Methods for Academic and Personal Success (MAPS) class to develop skils to help with thelr transition to high school. Results show those teachers’ ratings of their 3rd grade students’ SEL competencies were positively related to students’ performance in STAAR reading and math. Also, secondary ‘schools with more years in SEL showed greater improvement in attendance and greater reduction in campus discretionary removals than did schools with no years in SEL. Cynthia Diaz, Counselor, Small Middle School Sarah Stone, Austin ISD SEL Specialist Caroline Newman Phillips, Austin €d Fund Coordinator, Office of Innovation & Development Juliana Castillo, Campus Support Specialist, Office of Innovation & Development ©000000000 Big Picture Talking Points 1) Appreciation for the $M+ investment from the St. David's Foundation three years ago that sparked a revolution and helped SEL reach all students and become the crucial focus it is today for Austin ISD. 2) Au ISD is seeking to deepen implementation through 2020. To do this, we are doubling down on to truly shift culture ~ from SEL being not only "what we do" (explicit instruction) to also “who we are" (Focusing on adults, campus climate and culture). Austin ISD includes nearly 84,000 students and 12,000 employees. 3) Strategies for SEL 2.0 are based on our learnings and have been centered around four Big Bets: Your Role Leaders create the conditions where SEL thrives. Improving SEL competencies of the adults in students’ lives will improve SEL competencies of our students. With real-time access to meaningful data, leaders can more strategically support student social and emotional development, With consistent integration of SEL, students will graduate college-, career- and life-ready. Here is some guidance on the perspective each of you bring and what it may be valuable to share should the opportunity arise on Wednesday. Austin ISD Leadership (Dr. Cruz, Nicole Conley, Edmund Oropez, Trustee Elenz): Convey Austin IS0's deep commitment to this work not just in words, but in action (leadership institute, policy changes, SEL fellowship, etc.). Share how the first SOF SEL investment has been transformational ~ its impact on students and teachers and it has opened the door for more behavioral/mental health services in Austin ISD and our "whole child" approach. Share the ways Austin ISD is leading t! to SEL and how the district is thinking about SEL finan the US. Be prepared to talk about your commitment lly over the long-term - how it will be sustained. work 37 SEL Leadership (Pete Price): Convey our deep commitment to this work, SEL as a tier one strategy (health prevention}, and how it works with behavioral and mental health supports on a campus. Be prepared to speak to our SEL approach and the specific strategies we are requesting support for in our proposal and why they are important, Research and Evaluation (Lindsay Lamb): Be prepared to talk about SEL evaluation, Our past projects and how we're working nationally on the leading edge of this work. Austin Ed Fund Board Members (Darrell Pierce, Thomas Miranda and Amy Jones): Build confidence in Austin ISD and Austin Ed Fund by speaking positively about the district's thoughtful approach and deep commitment to SEL. Help Michelle answer questions about Austin Ed Fund's structute, finances and governance that may arise. ‘Small Middle School Leaders (Principal Matthew Nelson, Counselor Cynthia Diaz, Austin ISD SEL Specialist Sarah Stone): Show us how the magic happens. Let guests see SEL in action via 1) explicit instruction in the PRIDE class, and 2) improvements to campus climate by visiting classrooms, talking with kids and getting a feel for the culture at Small MS. Share the excellent work you have done with SEL curriculum and integration including the work this summer with teachers on curriculum design. Office of Innovation and Development (Caroline Newman Phillips and Juliana Castillo): General behind the scenes awesomeness to facilitate a smooth visit. Help with set up in library, greet guests and help with logistics. St. David's Proposal Overview: In August 2016, Austin ISD’s Office of Innovation and Development submitted a proposal to St. David's via the Austin Ed Fund for $3.1M. The grant request will support the deepened implementation of SEL through 2020 — changing SEL from not only “what we do” to also “who we are”. An investment from SDF would bolster support for this next round of SEL funding that began with a generous $2M pledge to support SEL through 2020 from the Buena Vista Foundation, Tapestry Foundation, and The Klein Family Foundation in July 2016. Year 1 request: $1,032,554 Year 2 request: $1,048,416 Year 3 request: $1,064,753 Total request: $3,145,723 Use of funds: Funds will accelerate our work and support staff who work with school leaders, stipends for peer leaders who facilitate on campuses, robust training equipping adults with research and trauma-informed strategies, dissemination of best practices locally and nationally, coordination with service providers, and evaluation staff to produce timely data that guides decision-making, A good overview of this detail is provided in the “Capacity Gap” section on page 16.
