Isaac Earlysman Sparrow was a passenger in a balloon flight
at Oxford, on the 23 June 1823, piloted by Charles Green (see 164 Edward III, Groat, pre-treaty period, series G,
lot 1911 below). He paid £50 and, watched by a crowd of London (S 1570), Penny, London; Henry VI,
some 5,000 people, had quite an eventful flight, the netting Groats (2), annulet issue, Calais (S 1836), Penny,
catching a chimney on take-off and then the repairing of the
balloon during the flight with a silk handkerchief. On landing leaf-pellet issue, York, Archbishop Booth (S
in the trees at Nettlebed Heath, Sparrow was thrown out of 1924); Edward IV, Groat, London, mm cinquefoil
the gondola, but managed to catch a rope and saved Green (S 2100); Henry VIII, Halfgroat, second coinage,
from drifting away. The tokens are believed to be by either T Canterbury, Archbishop Warham, mm cross
Wyon or T W Ingram. Sparrow’s “Leather Sauce” was not a
commercial success, and he was declared bankrupt. patonce (S 2343); Edward VI, Shilling, fine

Port Arthur had been captured during the first Sino-Japanese War, on 21st November 1894 by General Yamaji Motoharu when, in a complete
massacre, a reputed 60,000 Chinese servicemen and civilians were killed. After the capture of Kinchow Noghi commanded one of the
brigades sent to attack the seven immense forts surrounding Talien Bay and were then involved in the final taking of Port Arthur.
