Managing Classroom Procedures (TESS 2c) + Middle Level

Instructional Strategies (AMLE Standard 4, Element b)

With any classroom, it is

essential to have procedural guidelines
listed. In my classroom that I taught
during internship I had my students
come and sit down at the very beginning
of class. They were instructed to take out
a journal and then begin writing a
response that I usually had listed on the
board. Far to often I found myself
getting onto students for not coming in at
the beginning of class and writing in
their journal. To remedy the situation, I
wrote down on the board the entry
procedure for coming into the classroom
as shown on the left in the photo. After
that, if I had students question why I was
getting on to them, I simply referenced the area on the board. Their response to this action was a
mixture of groans, but it usually got the point across.

I believe that this establishment of procedure in the classroom most closely aligns with
standard four element b of the AMLE standards which states that teachers use instructional
strategies to encourage the exploration of the middle content to which the students are engaging
with. Because I write down on the board the standard entry procedure for students entering into
the classroom, they are able to stay on task and develop appropriate responses to the content that
I assign them.
