Charity Event Ad
About
The Charity Event Ad was an ad that I created for a fake event. It had to be
created using Microsoft Word and had to include at least one photo, event
details, and the reason for the event. While creating the ad, I learned a lot
about my abilities and ran into some road blocks.

I was used to designing in Adobe programs, so designing in Microsoft was a

challenge. The functionality of Microsoft wasn’t as designer friendly as I was
used to which gave me trouble. While completing this project I learned how to
quickly edit photos and combine shapes in order to create objects that
pertained to the subject. I’m most proud of the puzzle pieces I was able to
create.

Resume
About
The resume project was a resume that was created about myself with accurate
information. When designing my resume I learned a lot about hierarchy and the
importance it plays. I also learned that you want your resume to speak for itself
through its design and content to accurate represent your skills and experience.

I was able to reflect on myself and choose the most important and relevant
information that would represent myself. The requirements were that the
resume must be completely designed by myself and be created in Adobe
Indesign.

National Park
About
I created a national park flyer and mailer for Glacier Bay. I chose Glacier Bay
because it is very unique and the scenery is beautiful. The glaciers inspired my
design because of the colors and texture. I created both in Adobe InDesign.

While creating the postcard I was challenged with making a design that would
catch someones eye and fits enough information in the small space provided.
I learned that a post card needs to have space for other information such as a
stamp, address line, and barcode area. I create a logo for the mailer and flyer
and learned that simplicity is key. You don’t need a lot to get the point across.
The most important thing I learned from this was how to choose the right
information to grab an audiences attention and make them want to visit.

Children’s Book
About
The idea for my children’s book came from my younger cousin. One day I was
babysitting him and he was playing with a toy turtle. From there the idea of
Burt and Tanner developed. The importance or moral of the story is you will
make unexpected friends and that littering can harm ocean life.

I learned that designing a character to catch a child’s eye is really hard. You
want to have a simple design where they can easily identify the subject. Colors
were a large part of the design because as children are developing, one of the
first thing they learn are colors. I wanted to use colors that were distinguishable
and attractive to a child’s eye. My typography was also slightly larger than I
would normally use because it needed to be easily legible by the audience.

Branding Package
About
The branding package was one of the hardest projects I’ve ever worked on.
It was challenging because Tropicana Orange Juice was something I grew up
with, which made it hard to change the look of it since I was so used to the
design.

From designing this project I learned about the benefits of the juice such as the
amount of fruit servings in each glass and amount of calcium it contains.
Designing the package was difficult because it needed to stand out from the
competition. I learned that the package needed many elements that were
different, but worked well together and wouldn’t leave a consumer bored
looking at it. My favorite part about the design was the logo because it
challenged me to create something different from any other orange juice
company.

Holiday Card
About
The Holiday Card was one of my favorite projects. I chose to create a holiday
mailer for Pandora to send out to their customers. The mailer included a coupon
to help bring business in during the retail peak season.

I created a holiday logo for Pandora to accompany the card. I learned that the
design needed to be attractive and not have too much going on at once. Before
the snowflakes were added the design was too plain. They added a subtle glim-
mer to the design. From working in retail I learned that customers only want
a card if there is a coupon. I thought that would be a great way to drive traffic
for the company as well get their holiday image displayed. The most important
thing I learned was that the design needed to be cohesive with the company’s
theme. Pandora is very clean and simple which I wanted to keep within the
design.

Retro Poster
About
I was creating a retro poster for Disney’s Magic Kingdom. The idea was to take
the castle because it is very iconic to Disney I chose this slogan because it is
what Disney World is often referred to as.

During this project I leaned how to trace an image and turn it into a vector.
After doing this, I learned how to pull the exact colors out of the image to use
in the text. I made the slogan larger than the parks name because I wanted to
grab the viewers attention, letting them know Disney is “The most magical
place on earth.” I chose this typography because it gave the design a more
retro feel.

About
I created an inforgraphic focused on Christmas because it’s a largely
celebrated holiday. I wanted to create an easily read poster with accurate
information accompanied by graphics.

I learned how to use the pen tool to create a specific object. I used the pen tool
to create Santa’s sleigh which helped familiarized myself with it. I also learned
a lot about Christmas and the amount of people who celebrate it. The most
challenging part was deciding what graphics to create in order to accurately
display the information. I learned a lot about hierarchy and flow when creating
this project.

Icon Set
About
The icon project was a set of nine icons that would represent an upcoming
holiday. I chose to do Christmas for my icon set. I created the icons based on
what specific items make up Christmas. I wanted to create cute and fun icons
that would represent Christmas. The audience would be anyone who celebrates
Christmas.

I wanted my icons to represent all the great things about Christmas, and what
Christmas means to me. I learned how to use the pen tool to draw specific
objects I wanted that I couldn’t make with shapes. I also learned how to group
and combine shapes to make it easier to move and resize them. During this
project I also became more comfortable using keyboard shortcuts.

About Me
Hello all! I’m Kirsten Nguyen and I’m a
designer, journalist, and photographer.
I currently attend Wesley College majoring in multimedia communication.
While attending Wesley I have taken a variety of courses that have helped me
learn principles and turn them into my own unique designs. Within this
portfolio you will find a variety of my work I have completed during school.
I fell in love with photography and graphic design this past year and can’t get
enough of it. I have a passion for journalism and copies of my published articles
are in this portfolio.

The main reason I wanted to pursue this as my career is because I have worked
in retail my entire life and always admired the work that went behind the
design and marketing. I wanted to do the behind the scenes work that makes a
company. My favorite part about my creations and why I love what I do is the
creativity and uniqueness that is involved. I’m always looking for inspiration
and projects. If you would like to contact me about a project or a photoshoot 302-535-7049 p
