Power Train and Tire Rotation

In order to show the working of our Automatic Tire pressure inflation system under
dynamic condition or it’s working under motion, we had to rotate the tire, not worrying
about the speed of rotation but making sure that the rotation is unconstrained. To
achieve this we connected the tire with a mild steel shaft , 2 pedestal , 2 sprockets ,
1 bicycle chain ,1 motor and 1 battery. The motive was to just show the possibility of
automatic tire inflation during running conditions of the vehicle too and not just in the
stable condition.

Since our aim was mere showcase the ability of the system we did not go into the
depth of demonstrating the process under considerable high speed as it would have
led to not only added cost of the components but would have also made the project
bulkier and complex since under that case a high powered motor had to be
incorporated so we stuck to the basics.

Specifications of the components used -

Shaft – 20mm diameter , mild steel was used due to easy availability and lesser cost

Bearings - Two pedestal bearings of inside diameter 20mm ,cast iron P204 was
used, it has a longer life. Dynamic load rating= 12.8kN and axial load= 6.65kN.

Sprockets- 2 sprockets of 16 teeth and 22 teeth were used to provide rotation to the
shaft. They were connected by a small bicycle chain with just atmost tightness to
provide max speed without slag formation.

Motor- As mentioned already we are more interested in presenting the idea rather
than demonstrating the actual working so we used the motor used in an automobile’s
wiper to rotate the wheel or to provide motion to the system. Reason behind this was
that at this point we needed good torque for smooth working hence it was a
unanimous decision to go wiper motor, also it is light in weight and cost effective
therefore easy installation.
