Instrument

Unit

Families:
Woodwind
Brass
Strings
Percussion
Introduction
Throughout this unit, I changed up the way I did pre-assessment, Formative assessment, and
post-assessment because it fit this unit well.
In my pre-assessment, I will have an introductory quiz using Kahoot that introduces all the
instrument families and gives me an idea of what instruments the students already know. After
this quiz, I will separate each class period into the different instrument family. For example, the
first-class period will focus on the Woodwind Family. I will use a worksheet that reviews the
instruments from the Kahoot quiz while giving more information about those instruments. I will
go through this worksheet at the beginning of each class period for each instrument family.
Throughout each lesson, I will share information about each instrument, show them pictures of
each and play a few so they get an idea of what they sound like.
For my formative assessments, the students will take a quiz after each instrument family lesson.
This allows for the students to remember the information well for the quiz, so they do not have
to wait until the end of the unit to take a test over all the families which will make every
student more successful.
The post-assessment consists of a jeopardy game that concludes everything we have learned
throughout this unit. I will have no written assessment at the end of this activity but based off
my observations during this game, I will give them grades for participation and for how well
they answer questions during the game.

Pre-Assessment
The students will take a Kahoot quiz that I have put together. This quiz will introduce the four
families of instruments we will be discussing throughout the unit. Having the students take this
quiz will give me an idea of what the students already know and what they don’t know about
instruments. This will set up the unit with what the students will need to learn about the
instruments and will help guide my teaching.
Formative Assessments
Throughout the unit, students will take a quiz over the instruments that we learn. I will teach
about all the instrument families. After each class period on an instrument family, I will give a
quiz on that family. This will give me an idea of how the students are learning and what I need
to change to help them learn better in the next family.

Post Assessment
Students will play instrument bingo to review the instruments that we have learned about in all
instrument families. This is also a great listening activity, so the students can again hear what
the instruments sound like and identify instruments by how they sound. After the review,
students will play instrument jeopardy that covers every instrument family and every main
point we learned about for each instrument. Through this game, make tally marks of how the
students improved/ what they still struggle with to post in the unit data sheet.
