MEDICAL TEXTILES
MARKET ANALYSIS ON MEDICAL TEXTILES PRODUCTS

INTRODUCTION

There is a huge and diverse variety of products based on textile structures and constructions are used
commonly at local hospitals, clinics, medical institutions and also in the consumer market for medical
and healthcare purposes. Just to evaluate an idea of the application and consumption of this huge range
of products, some market research surveys undertaken in some of the renowned multi-disciplinary
hospitals at Karachi. The survey has been undertaken by the Textile Research & Innovation Centre
(TRIC), whose main objective is to develop a knowledge base community to meet the emerging
challenges in textiles and their potential impacts on the local /international market.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

The overall purpose of this research is to identify the list of goods being most frequently used at
hospitals, thus enabling TRIC;

 In developing a pool of information regarding the goods specifications and the descriptions
significantly related to it.
 To evaluate clear and concise research areas which can be developed into potential Applied Research
initiatives.

For more details see Appendix- A, Concept Proposal

DATA COLLECTION

Experts and Professionals affiliated with the hospitals and companies were surveyed and mixed
methods method is employed for data collection and analysis through interviews, observations and
questioners. The selection of the hospitals is done randomly in district wise, in category wise (Private /
Government), and in discipline wise (multi-disciplinary / specialty discipline).
The name of the institution/ organization is kept confidential, unless their prior approval or permission.
The data base reported in aggregate form (mentioning them in numbers) to ensure that no individual
can be identified.

Since the data base shown in the table 1, 2 and 3 respectively probably demonstrates the consumption
of only the fractional part of this vast array.

ANNUAL CONSUMPTION OF MEDICAL TEXTILES PRODUCTS AT HOSPITAL-1

The statistical data that have been discussed in the table 1, 2 and 3 is based on the annual procurement
of medical textile goods via hospital’s Purchase Department. However, number of products also being
procured and employed in the hospital via out-sourcing channels.

The data tabulated in Table 1. represents the list of Non-Implantable goods (for elementary information
on Non-implantable materials, see report 1.), which has procured at Hospital-1 during the fiscal year
2007-2008. However, there is a possibility that few products might not have been tabulated in the table
1, which beongs to this league of medical textiles.

Table 1: The annual consumption of some of the Non-Implantable Goods consumed at Hospital-1.

Figure 1 represents the country-wise synopsis of the procurement of Non-Implantable goods. Pakistan
possessed the highest share with a value of PKR. 22.28 million while the UK and Germany followed next
with the values of PKR 11.95 and 9.64 million respectively. The number of goods belongs to Pakistan are
high in volume terms but on the other hand they are low value added, if we holistically compare these
products with the ones which are being imported from other hemisphere of the world.

during the fiscal year 2007-2008.

Few products such as Aprons and OT towels are tabulated on the average consumption of these
products on per month basis (as 2100 aprons per month or 5200 OT towels per month – Interviewed
Incharge Purchase, General Department, Hospital-1).

Note: The goods like sterilized bed sheets, blankets or pillow cases have not been listed in Table 2,

Table 2: The annual consumption of some of the Healthcare and Hygiene products consumed at
Hospital-1.

Graphical interpretation of Table 2 is shown in Figure2. Miscellaneous has got the highest share of 40%
with a value of PKR 14.83 million while China has got the second highest share in Healthcare and hygiene
products with a value of PKR. 9.9 million. Dignity sheet seems to be a major product which has been
importing on a large scale. These are the nonwoven flat sheets used for incontinent purpose of patients.
The countries includes in the Miscellaneous segment are China and UK mostly. That’s why
Miscellaneous is used rather than rest of the world due to the overlapping of China and UK in this
segment.

Therefore, it was not feasible to list all the sutures along with its description and unit consumptions.
Therefore, the Purchase Manager helped out TRIC in giving an average procurement per month (with
respect to the billing amount) during the Interviewing and Questioning session. He told that average
billing amount of sutures lies in between PKR 600,000 thousands to 800,000 thousands per month.

RESULT & DISCUSSION

The key points interpreted below is based on the Market Survey at Hospital-1; which is equipped to
diagnose with the departments of Hematology, Histopathology, Radiology, Microbiology and treat
Medical patients (including Cardiology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology,
Orthopedics, Pediatrics etc.) as discussed above.

 The Annual procurement of the products related to Medical Textiles is amounted over PKR 100
million (the figure is the sum of the only those products which has been listed above, in table
1, 2 and 3 respectively).

 The gross share of the products imported from foreign countries is 69% with a value PKR 69.03
million, while the rest 31% only with the value of PKR 30.89 million, has been procured from
indigenous manufacturing.

 Bandages, Sutures, Compression Stockings, Dignity sheets/Diapers and Surgical gowns are
some of the products which are widely being imported, from UK, USA, TURKEY and CHINA

The results of this research may provide an insight into the road-mapping process that can
be employed for the indigenous development of medical textiles. A pilot roadmap for the
medical textile industry can be developed after stream-line the products to identify the
process/product performance, further specification of a product or products, technology
barriers/challenges for achieving these targets and the priorities related to research and
development for achieving the targets.
