Peer-Review Lesson 1

Student teaching the Learning Activity: __Destiney McIntosh___________ Date: _4-10-18______

Peer reviewing the Learning Activity: ____Marta Kuzma_____________________________

The SOE student _x___ had Learning Activity plan approved in advance and provided it for the reviewer.

__x__ had all materials for the Learning Activity organized and ready to use.

__x__ communicated the plan and roles with the other adults in the room.

Investigative Topic: ____Construction______________________________________________________

Title of Learning Experience: ___Tool Exploration_________________________________

Briefly Describe the Learning Experience: Include the number of children, how the environment was staged,
materials included, the experiences and whether or not the children were engaged (if not engaged-
where/when did their engagement wane?)

For this activity, we had about 10 students. She decided that it would be best for the students to work in two
small groups. Destiney worked with some at the table while she had me work with others at another station.
Both groups were next to each other so that we could communicate with each other and I could take pictures
of the experiences. At Destiney’s table, students worked on using hammers, nails and Styrofoam to create
structures. She planned on creating different structures, one using nails and one without, in order to compare
the sturdiness of each. However, when she went to do the activity, it became more about letting the students
experience how the tools work in practice. She asked a few students what would happen if they decided to
knock it over their structures and a few of them understood that the nails held the pieces together. They were
all really engaged with the activity and seemed to really enjoy working with the materials, even if they didn’t
get to work on comparing two towers.

What went well?

Destiney was really flexible with the activity and adjusted it to the student’s understanding. She knew her
objectives and worked to try to get each child to that portion of the lesson. She was engaged with each child
and really tried to keep them engaged with the activity.

What recommendations for improvement do you have? (Peer reviewers must include at least one
recommendation for improvement)

If she were to do the activity again and we had different conditions, I would recommend that she’d give them
time to explore the materials and then come back to the concept of the two towers. I think the biggest
adjustments she should make were out of her control.
