Course Objective:
This course discusses the dynamics of various machine tool parts including velocity and
acceleration analysis of various machine element pairs such as gears,
linkages, cams etc.

Aim of the Course:

Upon completion of the course, students will have a basic understanding of:

1) Transfer of motion between rigid bodies. Identification of magnitude and direction

of velocity and acceleration on various parts of machines.
2) Effective conversion of rotator motion to reciprocating motion as most of the
machines have rotation motion at input.
3) Geometry and kinematic characteristics of different types of gears used in
machines.

Course Syllabus:

Simple Mechanism
Links, classification and kinematic pairs, Degree of freedom, linkage mechanisms,
Mobility of mechanisms, Equivalent Mechanisms, inversions of slider crank chain and
double slider crank chain, four bar linkage, compound chains in brief.

Velocity and Acceleration in Mechanism

Velocity of point in mechanism, relative velocity method, instantaneous centre in
mechanism, Instantaneous centre method, Kennedys theorem of three-centres, corriolis
component acceleration, Kleins construction for slider crank and four bar mechanism,
Analytical method for slider crank mechanism.

Mechanism with Lower Pairs

Pantograph, straight line motion mechanism, peculliar mechanism, Harts straight line
mechanism, scortrusel mechanism, grasshopper mechanism, tehebicheff mechanism,
roberts mechanism., analysis of hooks joint, introduction to the analysis of complex
mechanism, Davis and Ackermann steering gears.

Kinematic Synthesis of Plane Linkages

Linkages, geometrical methods, 3 position synthesis of coupling rod, analytical method,
Frendenstem equation for function generation (3 position).

Cams
Classification of cams & followers, nomenclature types of followers, generation of cam
profile by graphical methods, analytical cam design, pressure angles, cams with
specified contours.

Gears
Classification & terminology, law of gearing, geometric & kinematic characteristic of
involute, under cutting & interference, gear trains (simple, compound, reverted &
planetary) also with bevel gears.

Course Assessment:

Assignment: Total 2 assignments of 15 marks will be given

Assignment may vary the number of questions.
Average Marks of both assignments will be considered
as final marks

» Hand written assignments have to be submitted. Assignments solved to be properly

filed. The first page should contain student’s name, enrollment number, subject name,
subject code and name of course instructor. All assignments should be submitted to the
course instructor within the stipulated date as per the academic calendar, failing which
certain marks will be deducted.

Quiz: »3 Quizzes of 10 marks each: best 2 will be averaged

Tutorial: »Each tutorial class will be full of discussion of problems

associated to running unit.

»Tutorial at the end of unit will be a test of10 marks; the

average marks will be converted to out of 40.

Attendance: »10 marks will be allotted to 100% lecture attendance and

will be reduced with the percentage of attendance (0
lectures means 0 marks).
Mid-Term: »Course for mid term exam will be the units covered before
the exam. All the topics more or less will be covered in
mid-exam.

Term-End: »Paper will consist of approx. 40% theory and 60%

numerical.

Marking System for theory:

For maximum gain of marks, answers should be to the
point, and completely relevant to whatever asked.
Answers with diagrams would gain more marks.

Marking System for numerical:

For short numerical solution,

Calculation is equally important as the steps. 50% marks
may be reduced if calculation is wrong.

For long numerical solution,

Step marking would be given
Answer without proper steps or skipping of steps may
reduce approx 20% of marks
Can get 85% marks for a solution with right steps but wrong
answer (calculation mistakes)
