CHAPTER 2 – FORCE AND MOTION

EXPERIMENT 1 – MASS & INERTIA

1. INFERENCE: The inertia of an object depends on its mass.

2. HYPOTHESIS: When the mass increase, the inertia will increase.
3. AIM: To investigate the relationship between the inertia and mass of an
object.

4. VARIABLES:
a) MANIPULATED VARIABLES: mass of plasticine
b) RESPONDING VARIABLE: inertia(period of oscillation)
c) CONSTANT VARIABLE: length of jigsaw blade

5. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:

Jigsaw blade, G-clamp, stopwatch, plasticine balls of masses 20g, 40g, 60g,
80g and 100g

6. ARRANGEMENT OF APPARATUS:

7. PROCEDURE:
(1) The apparatus is set up as above.
(2) A 20g plasticine ball is fixed at the free end of the jigsaw blade.
(3) The free end of the blade is displaced horizontally and released so that
it oscillates.
(4) The time for 10 complete oscillations, t is measured using a stopwatch.
𝑡
(5) The period of oscillation, T is calculated using = .
10
(6) The experiment is repeated using plasticine balls of masses 40g, 60g,
80g and 100g.
8. TABULATION OF DATA:

9. DATA ANALYSIS:
A graph of period of oscillation against mass is plotted.
